In a series of blunt posts on his Twitter feed, "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan is accusing his onetime co-star Matthew Fox of beating women.

Monaghan was in the midst of a fan Q&A on Twitter earlier this week when a user going by the screen name Becca wrote, "holla at matthew fox and tell him to get a twitter i beg of you." Monaghan's reply: "he beats women. No thanks."
Becca and Monaghan continued their conversation -- Becca wanted to know "what about all those good times you had together?" to which Monaghan replied, "how do you know we ever did? you don't know either of us. he beats women. not isolate incidents. often. not interested."
Monaghan went on to defend himself against those saying he was making false accusations.
TODAY.com reached out to Fox's manager and attorney for comment, but they have yet to respond.
Fox and Monaghan worked closely together on "Lost" from the series' beginning in 2004. While Monaghan's character Charlie was killed off in the season three finale in 2007, he returned for a number of episodes before the show ended its run in 2010. In a case of art apparently imitating life, Charlie and Fox's character Jack were often at odds with each other.
While "Lost" was on the air, personal conflicts between Monaghan and Fox, if there were any, were never publicized. That said, Fox is no stranger to off-screen controversy. In 2010, a stripper told In Touch magazine that the married actor had an affair with her (which he later denied); in 2011 Fox was charged with assault after allegedly punching a female bus driver in the breasts and groin; and just recently, Fox was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Gold futures for June delivery dropped $20 to close at $1,548, while silver futures fell 60 cents to finish below $28. Ratings agency Egan-Jones cut Spain?s credit level from B to BB- with a negative outlook. It was the third downgrade from the firm in less than a month. Reuters reported, ?Much as it did in downgrades last week and in late April, the company pointed to deteriorating public finances and worries that the country will be faced with sizable payments to support its banking sector. Spain is battling a debt crisis that is shaking its government, banks and companies. The country will soon issue new bonds to fund ailing lenders and indebted regions despite borrowing costs nearing the 7 percent level that drove other states to seek a bailout.?
Despite deteriorating public finances appearing in countries across the entire globe, including the United States, many investors continue to flee to the U.S. dollar as a safe-haven asset. The dollar index, which compares the dollar in a basket against six other fiat currencies, climbed to as high as 82.63 on Tuesday. The euro, which accounts for the majority of the dollar index, fell to its lowest level since July 2010 at $1.2458. ?We are seeing the headline-driven market continue to prop up the greenback amid the growing threat of a Spain bailout paired with fears of a Greek exit,? explained David Song, currency analyst at DailyFX. Today, the dollar continues to charge higher while the euro sinks below $1.24. In fact, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to its lowest level on record this morning, below 1.65 percent. More than half of the companies in the S&P 500 now yield more than the 10-year note.

While some may expect bullion demand to be significantly lower from falling gold prices, demand for gold as an insurance policy on fiat currencies remains high. For the first-quarter, gold investment demand jumped 13 percent to 389.3 tonnes, compared to 343.5 tonnes a year earlier. Earlier this month, Russia?s central bank also announced it will keep buying gold in order to diversify foreign exchange reserves. Even though precious metals can be volatile at times, it is better to have your insurance a year early than a day late.

Establish a daily routine. Get more things done by finding a routine for doing things, and employ this routine all the time. First try out a variety of ways to do things, and determine which strategy works best. When you arrive at the office, do you check your answering machine, go through your incoming mail, make a list of things to do by order of urgency, and then tackle each task one by one?
If this system works for you, then don't interchange each step for the other. If you tackle one task before checking on your phone calls and emails, there is a chance that something sent via email or a voice message may have an effect on the task you did - but missed it completely, since you decided not to follow the normal routine. Having a routine ensures the smoother running of things - and we all know how established procedures and rules have a great impact on everybody's life. If there were no routines, we would all look like headless chickens running around aimlessly.
We don't have a clear view of where to start, how to do things, and if we have already achieved the end of a task.
Tackle big projects on a regular basis. We all know that people are subject to procrastination whenever issues involving tackling the ugly, difficult but essential things are concerned. Like or not - life is like that. Not everything will be to our liking, and not everything will be easy. Resolve to take on the big things regularly (timed, if possible).
Even if you set them aside, the work will not solve itself. No matter how daunting it is to clean out that filing cabinet, it still needs to be done. No matter how boring and scary regular auditing and balancing of books are - these still need to be made.
Imagine if you refuse to balance your books at the end of the month, and this lingers on for 6 months - then you'll have an even more difficult, more tiring, time-consuming and extremely difficult job that you still will eventually have to do!
Can you even remember where you spent that $600 on? Do you still have the receipt? The longer you postpone things, the harder they will be to accomplish. The journey to success starts with the very first step.
Get rid of stuff you don't need. Declutter, declutter, declutter! Is your work table hidden underneath a mountain of papers, news clippings, used up batteries, dust, cobwebs and empty soda bottles? Do you still plan to use any of these things? Sure, the cobwebs may be useful for that annual Halloween party, but you know why there are cobwebs, right? Spiders and all sorts of bugs may be eating right into your precious office papers and computer peripherals.
I can't even imagine how much sneezing and allergies people around your office space may be suffering. The surest way to get rid of all these useless clutter and garbage is to devote one full day into going through them, throw away or donate whatever is unnecessary, sanitize your table and keep things neat from that day on. Immediately throw into the trash bin everything after they are used up (hey, those ink-less and dried up pens will never resurrect on their own), and make a conscious effort to keep your desk as clean and as orderly as possible.
This way, working is easier, and you save yourself from the tedious effort of sifting through mounds of paperwork to get one document you need. The less clutter, the clearer you will be able to think, and the easier it is to get things accomplished.

World's largest release of comprehensive human cancer genome data helps speed discoveries
Tuesday, May 29, 2012To speed progress against cancer and other diseases, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ? Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project today announced the largest-ever release of comprehensive human cancer genome data for free access by the global scientific community. The amount of information released more than doubles the volume of high-coverage, whole genome data currently available from all human genome sources combined. This information is valuable not just to cancer researchers, but also to scientists studying almost any disease.
The release of this data was announced as a part of a perspective published in Nature Genetics online May 29.
The 520 genome sequences released today are matched sets of normal and tumor tissue samples from 260 pediatric cancer patients. The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is expected to sequence more than 1,200 genomes by year's end. Each sample is sequenced at a quality control level known as 30-fold coverage, ensuring maximum accuracy. St. Jude researchers are analyzing the genomic sequences to determine the differences between each child's normal and cancerous cells to pinpoint the causes of more than a half-dozen of the most deadly childhood cancers, an effort which has already produced a number of key discoveries reported in top scientific journals.
"This effort has generated more discoveries than we thought possible," said James Downing, M.D., St. Jude scientific director who leads the project at St. Jude. "We want to make this information available to the broader scientific community so that, collectively, we can explore new treatment options for these children. By sharing the information even before we analyze it ourselves, we're hoping that other researchers can use this rich resource for insights into many other types of diseases in children and adults."
Launched in early 2010, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is the world's largest effort and investment to date to understand the genetic origins of childhood cancers. The three-year project will cost an estimated $65 million. St. Jude is covering $55 million of the cost, including a $20 million commitment from Kay Jewelers, a long-standing partner of St. Jude. This is the first major privately funded human genome sequencing project to share its data as soon as it becomes available. To date, this type of open access has largely been restricted to government-funded efforts. Non-government efforts are typically treated as proprietary.
"Setting this precedent reflects a commitment to freely sharing information that has been a hallmark of St. Jude since we opened our doors 50 years ago," said Dr. William Evans, St. Jude director and CEO. "The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project is a one-of-a-kind effort, so the information has the potential to accelerate disease research worldwide."
Researchers worldwide will be able to access the sequence data via the Web-based European Genome-Phenome Archive, which provides large datasets for free access by researchers on request: www.ebi.ac.uk/ega/organisations/EGAO00000000046.
While most cancer genome initiatives focus only on genes, which make up a small portion of the genome, the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project researchers have taken a different approach. They are sequencing the entire genome ? all the DNA ? in each patient's tumor. This provides a richer, more complete picture of the DNA changes underlying the development and progression of each patient's disease.
"This approach has been more valuable that anyone could have predicted," says Richard K. Wilson, Ph.D., director of The Genome Institute at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. "We have identified unusual, 'cryptic' changes in many patients' cancer cells that we would not have found using other methods. We are pleased to be able to share this data with the research community in hopes that others can build upon our initial discoveries."
The Pediatric Cancer Genome Project has already yielded significant insights into aggressive childhood cancers of the retina, brainstem and blood published in leading international scientific journals. Project researchers working on the eye tumor retinoblastoma discovered clues to the tumor's rapid development that enabled them identify a promising new anti-cancer agent. Investigators studying a deadly childhood leukemia known as early T-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) found unexpected genetic alterations that could change diagnosis and treatment for patients with this disease. Efforts to understand the genetic changes underlying a brainstem tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) found that a startling 78 percent of the tumors carried changes in two genes not previously tied to cancer. Most recently, project researchers identified a gene mutation associated with a chronic and often fatal form of neuroblastoma?a discovery that provides the first clue about the genetic basis of the long-recognized but poorly understood link between treatment outcome and age at diagnosis.
"These findings would not have been possible without the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project," said Downing. He said these results offer new strategies for finding and treating these high-risk cancers. The project has also demonstrated the marked differences between pediatric and adult cancers, underscoring the importance of developing therapies specifically for childhood cancers.

Exposure to solvents at work may be associated with reduced thinking skills later in life for those who have less than a high school education, according to a study published in the May 29, 2012, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
The thinking skills of people with more education were not affected, even if they had the same amount of exposure to solvents.
"People with more education may have a greater cognitive reserve that acts like a buffer allowing the brain to maintain its ability to function in spite of damage," said study author Lisa F. Berkman, PhD, of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. "This may be because education helps build up a dense network of connections among brain cells."
The study involved 4,134 people who worked at the French national gas and electric company. The majority of the people worked at the company for their entire career. Their lifetime exposure to four types of solvents?chlorinated solvents, petroleum solvents, benzene and non-benzene aromatic solvents?was assessed. The participants took a test of thinking skills when they were an average of 59 years old and 91 percent were retired.
A total of 58 percent of the participants had less than a high school education. Of those, 32 percent had cognitive impairment, or problems with thinking skills, compared to 16 percent of those with more education. Among the less-educated, those who were highly exposed to chlorinated and petroleum solvents were 14 percent more likely to have cognitive problems than those with no exposure. People highly exposed to benzene were 24 percent more likely to have cognitive problems, and those highly exposed to non-benzene aromatic solvents were 36 percent more likely to have cognitive problems.
"These findings suggest that efforts to improve quality and quantity of education early in life could help protect people's cognitive abilities later in life," Berkman said, who worked alongside study author Erika Sabbath, ScD. "Investment in education could serve as a broad shield against both known and unknown exposures across the lifetime. This is especially important given that some evidence shows that federal levels of permissible exposure for some solvents may be insufficient to protect workers against the health consequences of exposure."

For those who are not among the cognoscenti, a pasty is a traditional and tasty food that resembles a meat and potato pie. It has almost iconic status in its place of origin, the distant and beautiful county of Cornwall.
In days gone by, it was the food of miners and farmers -- a robust parcel of pastry (so legend has it) that could be dropped steaming hot down a mine shaft to the menfolk below or thrown over a high hedge to the agricultural laborers on the other side.
According to folklore, in one end there was savory meat, spuds and turnip and -- on the other side of a pastry wall -- fruit jam.? Entree and dessert all in one steaming package.? Genius.
No wonder a simpler version was adopted all across the country.? It has become a staple of many a working lunch, snatched from the oven of a high street food store and wolfed down on the nearest bench or at a desk.

Being perfectly candid, I can say, though I have a fit-looking body, I would love to lose 20 pounds - get it off and keep it off. I do love food. It's a perplexing dichotomy to me that I can be both happy enough looking in the mirror to justify undisciplined eating habits, yet unhappy enough also to want to lose those 20 pounds.
Between what is real and how I feel isn't much but it's enough to keep me from my goals, until, that is, I decide once and for all what I want. I believe we all have situations where we battle with what's real and how we feel about it - being that there is often a gap we find incredibly hard to bridge.
It might be that we're single and yet yearn to be in a relationship. It might be that we have a health problem and just wish to be healthier than we can be. We may be at a loss to change something about us, and the reality we detest, yet there just doesn't seem any way to make the change or accept the way we are or the cards we've been dealt.
LIFE IS A PARADOX
This is no answer, but it does point out an important fact that can help. If we accept our realities, that acceptance can influence how we feel. On the other hand, if we decide we cannot accept our realities, and we do wish to drive ourselves to change, our feelings can influence our realities. With motivation we can achieve change slowly over time.
But life is a paradox, in that our realities, however good they are, are never really satisfactory; not to us. Sure, to others what we have and many of the problems we have are interpreted differently. But it's our lives. We're the ones needing to live in our skin, thinking and feeling as only we can.
Between what's real and how we feel is a gap, and an opportunity, to be worked on. Both acceptance and the challenge to change can reduce this gap. We could even do both. Anything to reduce the level of felt insanity that we deal with on a daily basis - the self-talk that runs rampant between both places - our realities and how we feel about them.
COMMITTING TO REDUCING THE GAP
Reducing the gap between what's real and how we feel is an important step in our process for contentment. Being aware of this gap can send us out of our minds, unless we choose to do something about it.
Committing to change and to create new more satisfying realities is acting on the feelings we're not happy with. We either change or accept; making the decision is the most important thing. But then the decision must be worked out. It's a process taking time; our entire lives in many cases.
Bridging the gap between what is real and how we feel is the spiritual conquest of our lives. Beyond our commitment and our process is the grace of God to get us there - to acceptance or change or a combination of both.

Bravo to Edina Realty in Minnesota, they have put their large foot down and have decided to reign-in the real estate listing aggregation
systems that are competing for the home buying and home selling consumer.
Yesterday, the Inman News website reported that Edina announced that ?its listings will disappear from the last national portal it was providing listings to, Realtor.com, within 10 days.?
As one of the largest independent real estate brokerages in the US, an action against the status quo should be worthy of the attention of Realtors around the country. And to anybody who is trying to understand how the internet has impacted the way that to sell a home today.
There is so much more going on with this announcement than Edina or Inman is letting on. This is not really about the accuracy of the information, rather it is about the control of information gathered by the real estate company.
The value of real estate listing aggregation systems is debated on a regular basis, but rarely if ever by companies or organizations that actually measure their impact on home sales in any given market.
What most real estate agents fail to grasp about real estate listing aggregation can best be explained by the law of diminishing returns. Most agents feel that ?more is better,? so the more real estate listing aggregation sites, the better the exposure of the homes for sale, and the greater likelihood of getting a home sold.
And to an extent, they are right? But not really.
As an extreme example, if I were to but a billboard on top of Mount Everest featuring a home for sale (as in the image above), it would not hurt or diminish my ability to get the home sold. But would it really help?
This is where the law of diminishing returns tells us that ?more and more? real estate listing aggregation websites do not really provide a benefit to getting a home sold, enough is enough.
So if Edina pulled some of its real estate listing aggregation, what was their real motivation?
I think the simple answer is control. Why are we ?giving? our hard-earned data to Realtor.com? We know that it won?t get homes sold!
Before you start defending the use of large aggregator sites, you have to ask yourself a very important set of questions:
Think about it, real estate listing aggregation already reaches over 94% of the market, more sites that feature properties will not enhance your ability to sell a home. The real secret is understanding the difference between ?house viewing sites? versus local real estate websites where ready-buyers congregate.
Just as I have found that more than 70% of the homebuyers in Tallahassee are using one particular property search tool, I suspect that Edina has measured and found that most of the ready buyers in their market are already on their popular regional website. Thus, any real estate aggregation to Realtor.com is going to dilute the market with non-regional players who only plan to add to the cost of buying a home (through fees charged to consumers, Realtors, and lenders for the ?traffic? that Realtor.com generates).
And this is not really about Realtor.com, it?s about all the no-value-added real estate listing aggregation sites that are trying to pull another buck out of the deal when you choose to buy or sell a home. Most consumers start on these sites, but they end up migrating to regional sites (like manausa.com) to find the content and tools that they need to use to make a local real estate transactional decision.
If more large brokers will join Edina and pull away from real estate listing aggregation, we will see the preservation of the local real estate expert.
But the contrary is true as well, and if the large real estate listing aggregation sites have their way, we will see fewer local real estate experts and the move to Caveat Emptor in the residential real estate industry.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's initial public offering is the subject of two congressional inquiries and mounting lawsuits as the social network enters its fifth day of public trading.
The shares regained some ground Wednesday, rising $1, or 3.2 percent, to close at $32. They were up another 50 cents, or 1.6 percent, to $32.50 in early premarket trading Thursday. But they are still more than 14 percent below their $38 per share IPO price last week.
The stock's rocky inaugural trading day last Friday was followed by a two-day decline.
The launch was held up by a half-hour delay, caused by glitches on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It was marred further this week as investors began accusing the banks that arranged the IPO of sharing important information about Facebook's business prospects with some clients and not others.
Several shareholders who bought stock in the IPO have filed lawsuits against Facebook, its executives and Morgan Stanley, the IPO's lead underwriter. At question is whether analysts at the big underwriter investment banks cut their second-quarter and full-year forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO, and told only a handful of clients about it.
One lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, claims Facebook's IPO documents contained untrue statements and omitted important facts, such as a "severe reduction in revenue growth" that Facebook was experiencing at the time of the offering. The suit's three plaintiffs, who bought Facebook stock on its first day of trading May 18, claim they were damaged in the process.
Morgan Stanley declined to comment. Facebook said the lawsuit is without merit.
Another lawsuit, filed in San Mateo County Superior Court in California, claims Facebook and underwriters misled investors in Facebook's IPO documents. Both lawsuits seek class action status on behalf of investors who bought Facebook stock and lost money on Friday.
"No one gets it perfect, as far as saying what the financial results are," said Anthony Michael Sabino, professor at St. John's University's Peter J. Tobin College of Business. The bottom line, he added, is whether Facebook or the underwriter had material information about Facebook's finances that was not disclosed publicly.
"At this moment, it's still too early to say," Sabino said. "We don't know enough, but this could turn out to be an issue."
What is known is that, in March, Facebook began meeting with analysts at the underwriting firms. The gatherings are a customary part of the IPO process and are designed to help analysts understand the company's business so they can make accurate financial projections.
On May 9, the third day of Facebook's pre-IPO roadshow to meet with prospective investors, the company filed an amended IPO document that said its number of mobile users was growing faster than its revenue.
According to a person familiar with the matter, Facebook then had another meeting with analysts and told them that based on the new information in the filings, the analysts' forecasts should be at the low end of the range that the company gave them in April. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not publicly authorized to discuss the matter.
Adding to Wednesday's events, Facebook was in talks with the New York Stock Exchange to move its stock from the Nasdaq Stock Market after the botched offering, according to a person familiar with the matter.

NYSE spokesman Rich Adamonis said: "There have been no discussions with Facebook regarding switching their listing in light of the events of the last week, nor do we think a discussion along those lines would be appropriate at this time."
A Nasdaq spokesman declined to comment.
Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said late Wednesday that his panel wants to learn more about the social network's initial offering. The committee seeks briefings with Facebook representatives, regulatory agencies and others.
After the briefings, Johnson said, he will determine whether a hearing should be held.
Also gathering information about Facebook's IPO is the House Financial Services Committee. An aide to that panel said its staff is getting briefings.
The subject is likely to be raised in hearings by the committee in the coming weeks, even though no hearings are planned specifically on the Facebook IPO, the aide said. The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because the House committee's planned inquiry hasn't been publicly announced.

Months in the making -- the deal is finally done. Motorola Mobility is officially part of Google. After receiving blessings from Europe, the US and China, the Internet giant has put the finishing touches on its purchase of Moto's mobile division. Though the corporate marriage faced plenty of obstacles, Big G was able to put the manufacturer on its ledger for the price of $40 per share, or about $12.5 billion. As it stands, Motorola Mobility will continue to operate as a separate business entity and as a licensee of Android, but Mountain View is still claiming the purchase will allow it to "supercharge" its mobile ecosystem. The future of the new subsidiary's employees is a different matter, however. Rumors have been swirling for the last week or so that there could be significant layoffs at Moto following the merger, which would further enforce the perception that Google is more interested in the company's patents than in entering the hardware business. Earlier this week, Google?introduced Knowledge Graph, the company's new search technology that understands "things not strings" and adds rich and relevant details about your query in the sidebar of your search results. Here are five great things you can now do with a quick Google search.
I took the new version of Google Search for a spin to find out just what it can do, and have to say it's pretty useful. To recap, Google now connects your search query with its knowledgebase, which includes Wikipedia and the CIA World Factbook. If you search for a person, place, or thing within that 500+ million object database, Google adds the related key facts alongside the regular search results. (The tech is still rolling out, but you should see it when you're logged into Google sometime in the next few days, if you don't already.)
The new sidebar is great for offering a quick snapshot of what you're searching for and to answer basic questions. For example, here's the summary for The Beatles (you have to be precise in the search?? "beatles" or "the beatles" will call up the Knowledge Graph information, but "beatles music" won't). You get the first line from Wikipedia, date the band formed, members, awards, record labels, and more. Unfortunately, the songs and albums lists are condensed, but you can dig further on any person, place, or thing in the summary that Google has in its Knowledge Graph. The summary answers the who, what, when, and sometimes where of your search.
Besides giving you less reason to hit up Wikipedia and offering trivia facts, though, the sidebar can also help you actually accomplish things.
Find recommendations for movies, music, books, and TV
Kind of like Amazon's "people who bought this also bought" recommendation feature, you can check the "people also search for" recommendations in the sidebar for more entertainment suggestions when you look up a movie, show, artist, or book.
Google only lists five things there, however, and sometimes they're pretty obvious. For?The Hunger Games?books, for example, the related searches include the other titles in the trilogy. But sometimes other details provided in the sidebar will also suggest new things to explore???such as other books that fall into the "speculative fiction" and "utopian and dystopian fiction" genres. Or if there's a TV show or movie you really like, click on one of the writer's names or the director to find other work they've done.
Obviously, this isn't as robust as using movie, book, or similar recommendation apps or reading reviews for more suggestions, but in your one-second search, you just might find something new.
Find cultural events or other happeningsYou can also quickly find out what live events are happening at venues near you by looking up the establishment (a music venue, theatre, or comedy club, for example).
Look up a band or artist and if they're performing soon, Google tells you when and where???with the events nearby shown first. (Google already adds sports schedules for some major teams at the top of the main search results, so you won't find those schedules in the sidebar.)
Know the must-see attractions when you travelHeading to a new city? Google will recommend five top points of interest. For popular destinations like Paris, the suggestions will be obvious (the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, etc.), but you can click on the points of interest to get the map, address, and phone number???nice for quick lookup when you travel???as well as additional related places to visit and links to reviews.
The points of interest suggestions are more useful for less well-known attractions or unfamiliar destinations. (Next time I'm near Flagstaff, I won't pass up visiting the Meteor Crater.)
Locate the closest post office, dry cleaner, Italian restaurant, and moreLook up "post office" and alongside the original listing of US Post Office locations near you, Google now adds a handy map. If you want to mail your package from a different area, add the name to your search.
Those maps also show up if you search for "campground" or "waterpark," as well as "Chinese takeout," "Italian restaurants," and, more specifically, Starbucks or Target.
This is pretty neat: Rolling over the marker on the map highlights the corresponding place listed in the search results.
Find out what time it is in another city
Finally, quickly find out what the local time is in Milwaukee, Osaka, Auckland, or any other city by just typing it into the unibar and hitting enter.?Have you noticed any other nifty things the new Google search does? Share your finds with us in the comments.

This week?s guest blogger is Dan Fleig, a member of SCAN?s Public Education Committee and 2011 recipient of the Allies in Prevention Award. Dan is President of We-R-Safe, an all-inclusive program providing tools to make sure volunteers are checked and trained before being given the responsibility of being around youth. He is also a foster parent, but we?ll let him tell you about that now?
May is National Foster Care Month, and as such is intended to draw attention to the efforts and needs of foster care programs throughout the country. ?But one needn?t look any further than our own neighborhoods in Northern Virginia to see the crucial role these programs play in making a difference in the welfare of children.
As a foster care family in Fairfax County, VA, we?ve witnessed first-hand how these programs benefit children. When their lives have been turned upside down, foster care programs and foster parents (or ?resource parents? as we?re sometimes referred to today) provide hope and a chance those children might not otherwise have been given.
Children in foster care are those who, through no fault of their own, have experienced some form of abuse or neglect, or have been subject to some life-altering circumstances which put them at risk. ?As a result, many different parties such as the child?s family members, local child welfare and legal advocates, and in some instances the child (if he or she is old enough) each offer their perspectives regarding the child?s current home environment and caregiver(s) to a judge who ultimately makes the decision about whether or not a child will be placed in foster care.
Amazingly enough, all many of these children need is love, support and a renewed sense of safety. Which is exactly what foster care families are enabled to provide, and the very same conditions most of us take for granted.
While the ultimate goal of foster care is to reunite children in care with their families, it can?t always happen. In my family?s case, it resulted in the adoption of a beautiful and loving boy who now calls me dad. It never ceases to amaze me when someone (usually a neighbor) discovers we are a foster family. The typical response is one of unnecessary praise: ?How wonderful,? or ?You are such special people.? The reality is that we are a family who has many of the same resources as any other family in our neighborhood: an extra bed and a warm place in our hearts for children. We?ve just decided to use those to make a tangible difference in the life of a child and family in need.
If you have ever entertained the prospect of becoming a foster care family, I implore you to contact your local agency and attend a no-obligation orientation meeting. ?Becoming a foster family will require training, background checks, an in-home study and much more!
