Pakistan: Cough syrup suspected in 33 deaths

(AP) ? Authorities are investigating cough syrup believed to have killed 33 people in eastern Pakistan in the past three days, a government official said Saturday, the second time in recent months that suspect medicine is thought to have caused multiple deaths.

Also Saturday, an explosion ripped through a passenger bus while it was at a terminal in the southern city of Karachi, killing four people and wounding 40 others, police and hospital officials said. It's unclear if the blast was caused by a bomb or a gas cylinder exploding.

The deaths from the cough syrup occurred in Gujranwala and villages surrounding the city, said Abdul Jabbar Shaheen, the top administrative official in Gujranwala. Another 54 people are being treated at hospitals in the city who are also believed to have consumed the syrup. Those involved are thought to be laborers or drug addicts who drank the syrup to get high, said Shaheen.

Chemical samples collected from the victims' stomachs contained dextromethorphan, a synthetic morphine derivative used in cough syrup that can have mind-altering effects if consumed in large quantities, said Shaheen. It is being investigated whether the people affected by the syrup in Gujranwala drank too much of it, or whether there was a problem with the medicine itself, he said.

Twenty-three people died in the nearby city of Lahore in November after drinking bad cough syrup sold under the brand name Tyno. They were also described at the time as people who consumed the drug to get high.

Shaheen said the cough syrup involved in the incidents in and around Gujranwala was not sold under a single brand. He said there were some people in the city involved in the business of making cough syrup specifically to sell to drug addicts, and officials were trying to arrest the culprits.

Officials temporarily closed one Lahore-based pharmaceutical company whose cough syrup was found in the possession of some of those affected in Gujranwala and were investigating whether it caused any of the deaths, said Shaheen.

The blast that ripped through the bus in Karachi on Saturday set the vehicle on fire and reduced it to little more than a charred skeleton. Police were trying to determine whether the explosion was caused by a bomb or a gas cylinder, said police spokesman Imran Shaukat. Many buses in Pakistan run on natural gas.

The explosion killed at least four people and wounded 40 others, some of whom were in critical condition, said Seemi Jamali, a doctor at the hospital in Karachi where they were being treated.

Karachi has a long history of political, ethnic and sectarian violence. It is also believed to be home to many Taliban militants who have fled U.S. drone attacks and Pakistani army operations in the country's northwest.

Champagne Market Goes Flat Amidst Economic Trouble In Europe

PARIS -- Europeans are finding fewer reasons to pop open a bottle of Champagne as another year of economic troubles and high unemployment saps the region's appetite for the finer things. But while the latest industry figures show that sales might be on the wane in Europe, other markets, particularly Japan and the United States, are developing a taste for a glass of bubbly.

In what is certain to be bad news for the vineyards, France ? Champagne's largest market ? is drinking fewer bottles. Sales of Champagne for the country were down 4.9 percent, and 5 percent elsewhere in the 27-country European Union, in the first nine months of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011, according to CIVC, the national association of growers and producers of the wine.

Nineteen months of rising unemployment and growing fears that the worst is yet to come have taken their toll on France ? nearly seven in 10 French are worried about their country's future, according to a recent poll.

"The French are pessimist by nature," said Antoine Chiquet, whose family has been producing Champagne for three generations and wine for eight. "We had a difficult election, we're in an economy where Europe's foundations are being questioned."

Nonetheless, the country managed to drink 175.7 million bottles of Champagne from Nov. 1 2011 to Oct. 31 2012, according to CIVC ? enough for nearly 3 bottles a year for every man, woman and child but about 10 million bottles fewer than the previous year. In contrast, the U.S. consumed enough sparkling wine for about 1.5 bottles per person in 2010, the latest figures available from the California-based Wine Institute.

But while the news out of France and Europe is bad, CIVC figures show export sales were up 3 percent in the first three quarters of the year. Top markets included the U.S., Japan and, to a lesser extent, China. A total of 19.4 million bottles of Champagne went to the United States and 7.9 million went to Japan ? the only two countries outside Europe in the top seven export markets.

Takayasu Ogata, a Tokyo-based sommelier, said Champagne and sparkling wine consumption is climbing in Japan at a time when overall wine demand peaked about 2000. According to the French figures, Champagne consumption alone was up nearly 7 percent over a year there.

"Both individuals and restaurants are taking to Champagnes with personality, including those that are from small makers but taste good," he said.

Lower price is another reason. Gone are the days when a bottle of Moet & Chandon went for 5,000 yen ($60) or more in Japan. These days, you can get real Champagne for as little as 2,000 yen ($25).

Of course, for those with rich tastes and a budget to match there are still lots of expensive Champagnes, selling for 10 times that, according to Ogata, who works at Venture Republic, an Internet retailer, and is in charge of wines.

Beer remains the drink of choice for many "salarymen," but younger people and women are taking a liking to Champagne, Ogata says.

"It's about the bubble ? a sense of gorgeousness," he said in a telephone interview. "There's that thrill to opening up a bottle of Champagne."

China is also emerging as a potentially strong market for a glass of fizz, although the numbers remain small. In 2011, the latest figures available, it ranked 19th in export markets for Champagne, apparently because consumers are less discriminating about precise origins. According to an EU ruling, only sparkling wine made in a particular region in northeast France is allowed to carry the name Champagne. The United States makes some exceptions, as long as the labeling is clear.

"People enjoy the `boom' moment of opening sparkling wine. It is fun. It offers a more festive atmosphere and it tastes good," said said Yu Ming, a 29-year-old who operated a bar in Beijing's Sanlitun nightlife district until 2010. In China, he added, "people call all sparkling wine Champagne. They don't care where it is from or whether the fermentation is inside the bottle."

The sales manager at the BHG supermarket in a luxury shopping mall in Beijing confirmed that Champagne budgets are largely out of reach in China, saying most customers at the chic store will instead choose sparkling wine: "The most expensive Champagne is 7,800 yuan ($1,250) a bottle at my store, but the most expensive sparkling wine is only 268 yuan ($43)," said the manager, who gave his surname, Hou.

Chiquet, whose label Gaston Chiquet produces about 200,000 bottles a year, said France and Europe generally will remain the most important markets for Champagne. But for the numbers to climb again "we'll have to rediscover optimism."

"Champagne remains a drink for celebrating the big events of life," said Chiquet. "Happily for sales, at the end of the year, the French rely on tradition. Still, we're not going to catch up. Unfortunately, what's lost already is lost."

Obscure Retro Game System Comes Back on the iPad

The Atari 2600. Intellivision. The NES. The Genesis. Vectrex. Most of those names mean something if you were a kid of the ?80s or the ?90s. Unless you?re a serious fan of retro gaming, you probably aren?t familiar with the last one.

The Vectrex was a video game console from the early ?80s that was based on vector graphics. Vector graphics is based on shapes instead of pixels, and it?s responsible for the distinctive look of classic arcade games like ?Asteroids? or ?Tempest.? The Vectrex was notable for having its own monitor. It was black-and-white, but color was simulated through the use of overlays placed on the screen. Released just as the video game market tanked in ?83 and ?84, it wasn?t a commercial success but it does have a cult following among classic game fans for offering something close to an arcade experience.

Vectrex Obscure Retro Game System Comes Back on the iPad

Rantmedia Games is trying to recapture some of the magic on the iPad with Vectrex Regeneration. It aims to offer a true Vectrex experience, right down to the overlays. It even manages to capture the characteristic glow of vector monitors of the late ?70s and early ?80s.

?It?s the kind of app that I knew that I wanted and I knew that I would buy in an absolute heartbeat if someone else had done it,? Anton Faulconbridge of Rantmedia told Ars Technica.

For a modern video game system, check out a Captain America Xbox 360 mod. Atari also celebrated its 40th birthday with? 360 modded to look like an Atari 2600.

Perfecting Public Speaking ? Job Talk with Anita Clew

A reader writes:

Hello Anita,

I need your advice on something. Ever since I can remember I have been terrified of public speaking. Just the thought of it gets my stomach all stirred up. I have goals and aspirations to be an executive someday but know that I need to overcome my fears to get there. What can I do to make speaking in public less difficult?

Woman RunningDear, Stage Frightened,

Public speaking ranks very high up on the list of people?s biggest fears. According to Live Science?s article ?What Really Scares People: Top 10 Phobias,? public speaking and social phobia ranked #4 behind scary spaces, spiders, and snakes.

Being in front of a crowd with all eyes on you can be intimidating and anxiety ridden. I myself have had my fair share of being stage shy. The thought of speaking to a group made me feel like running for my life. I have always been jealous of those lucky individuals that look carefree, unscathed, and darn-right comfortable when they are giving speeches and presentations. Not fair, right? Well, life is not fair and when life gives us lemons, what do we do? Make lemonade.

Before you start even thinking about presenting a topic in public, you have to figure out the key elements. My friend, Bonnie Cox at Power Training Institute, has a great amount of experience in public speaking and has offered her professional advice to us! How lucky are we? Here are Bonnie?s proven tips to become at ease with your presentation skills and make you a pro in no time at all.

And from Anita?s bag of tips and tricks, a final piece of advice to leave you with? As scary as it may sound, the only way you are going to be more comfortable with your public-speaking self to is practice, practice, and practice some more. The more times you present, the less anxious you will be and the better you will become. Baby steps are usually the best way to go about it. It may sound silly, but try practicing your speech out loud in front of the mirror. Once you have nailed it, enlist your friends and family to test your skills out on. It should be a
no-judgment environment, one you are completely comfortable with. Then move on to bigger stages and audiences. You will be a master in no time.

Toastmasters has come out with a great video called Five Basic Public Speaking Tips. Check it out here:

20 Fantasy Football Players on Santa?s Nice List

1 of 21

list

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

It has been a long 2012 fantasy football season for everyone and in most leagues, this is the final week of the season with championship games. It is also the holiday season so there are many players that are Santa?s nice list because of how well they played in 2012. I?m sure that if you have a few of these players that you are likely in the title game or got very close.

This list is littered with quarterbacks with how pass-oriented the National Football League has become but two wide receivers crack this list. There are rookies in this list, there are returning veterans and some players whose careers got a jolt from a chance of scenery. It has been a year that will be remembered for records that should be broken in the next two weeks. I know that I wish I could have drafted the No. 1 player on this list instead of him slipping deep into the draft.

Here is my list of the 20 players who are on Santa?s nice list for fantasy football in 2012. I really hope that your season went well and that you are playing for a championship this week instead of being knocked out in the quarterfinals like I was in both leagues I play in. I know for me a few of these players are on my naughty list for that reason but a lot of you had these players to help you out and get you where you are now. It?s time to enjoy the last two weeks of the season.

Highway deaths fall to lowest number since 1949 ... - Zachar Law Firm

Phoenix-car-accident-lawyer

National highway deaths are down to the lowest level in over 60 years, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.?

In 2011, there were 32,367 highway deaths, decreasing 1.9 percent from 2010.? Additionally, this number was the lowest since 1949.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System also reported that the number of national fatalities was the lowest ever recorded, down .01 percent from 2010.? Fatalities involving passengers in SUVs, minivans, pickups and passenger cars decreased 4.6 percent.? Deaths in crashes with drunk drivers took 9,878 lives as opposed to 10,136 lives in the previous year.? Unfortunately, fatalities involving large trucks, bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists increased by 20 percent, 8.7 percent, 3 percent and 2.1 percent respectively.

Distraction-related accidents also increased by 1.9 percent, but officials are unsure of whether that number is due to increased reporting and awareness.

Despite Americans driving 1.2 percent fewer miles than in 2010, the NHTSA says that the change in number of deaths strongly outweighs the change in miles driven.? Officials believe the change was due to better technology, public education and through taking on issues like drunk driving, distractions and other safety hazards.

We are in more difficult economic times.? People have less money to spend.?

Less money to spend means less places to go, which means less cars on the road, which means fewer interactions and fewer auto accidents.?

How much of this is responsible for the decrease in accidents?? Hard to say.? But, are fewer accident happening because people are driving more safely?? After bring in the legal professional for 20 years, representing accident victims, I seriously doubt that to be the case.?

Whatever the reason, let?s hope the trend continues.?

Better jobless rate hurts jobless and economy

19 hrs.

Elizabeth Waldrop lost her medical management job nearly two years ago in a personnel shuffle. The 47-year-old Chicagoan had been receiving unemployment benefits, getting some financial support from her boyfriend and looking for work.

But the benefits ran out in October and that brought on what she called one of the toughest times of her life.

"Facing the end of my benefits felt like I was jumping off a cliff without a parachute," said Waldrop, who recently moved to Colorado to start her own interior design business after selling her personal possessions and using what little money she had left.

"I just figured it was better to try and do something I loved than have those personal things," said Waldrop. "And I didn't have much choice."

Waldrop is part of an ongoing paradox when it comes to the nation's unemployment picture. As the jobless rate inches down ever so slowly ? and more people find work ? they're actually hurting the people still without jobs.

That's because under seemingly contrary rules, states can only offer extended unemployment benefits if their jobless rate goes up year after year. States like California, Rhode Island, Nevada and Waldrop's Illinois still have high unemployment rates, but they have remained steady the past three years, and extended benefits for people in those states ended this summer.

While the federal government doesn't officially track what happens to people who have lost their benefits, the Government Accountability Office estimates that some 5.5 million workers have exhausted their state and federal unemployment benefits from 2007 to 2011. In 2012 alone, more than 500,000 people?some 100,000 in California?have also been estimated to have maxed out their benefits.

With the average benefit check is only around $300 a week?and benefits have run up to 99 weeks?the fact that so many people are no longer getting them hurts the overall economy, say analysts.

"The best evidence is that unemployment benefits affect the economy," said Gregory Price, professor of economics at Morehouse College. "For each dollar spent on benefits, they carry more than another dollar in spending. If you cut those things back, it can hurt economic growth."

Those who have exhausted their benefits have few options. These include government job training and placement programs and the ability to buy health insurance ? the COBRA program. But without a paycheck or unemployment funds, something like COBRA ? which costs $400 a month for an individual ? is out of reach for most of the jobless, say analysts.

"One of the hidden aspects of this is the pressure on Medicaid," said Farrokh Hormozi, an economist and professor at Pace University. "People are going to get sick and because of that, without any health insurance, it puts more pressure on social networks like Medicaid."

"Many people have to max out their savings or depend on relatives and friends to help them out," said Chad Stone, chief economist at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. "And more have to turn to federal programs like food stamps to survive. It's not a pretty picture."

The picture could get worse in the battle over the "fiscal cliff." Without a deal, all federal extended unemployment benefits are scheduled to end on Dec. 31, cutting off an estimated 2 million people. A million others could see their benefits disappear by April.?

According to a Congressional Budget Office report, extending the benefits?at a cost of some $30 billion to the government?would lead employers to create 300,000 new jobs from the spending and improve the gross domestic product by some 0.2 percent.

Besides providing the out of work with basic funds, the benefits offer some reason for getting up in the morning, said one analyst.

"People are definitely at risk if they lost their benefits of becoming discouraged from looking for work," said Jason Bent, an employment law expert at Stetson University College of Law. "There's some argument that unemployment benefits keep people from getting jobs or looking for work. But unemployment does not take care of people. It's just really designed to be a transition. And most people are looking for work. "

The only solution is more jobs, said Price.

"We have to hope the job picture gets better in the near future," Price said. "This labor pull back is the worst since World War II. We have to hope it improves."

For Waldrop, hoping was no longer an option.

"I had 20 years of experience in big pharma and medical management, but my getting let go turned me off to corporate America," said Waldrop. "I moved to Colorado to take my father's advice: Follow your creativity and create your own job."

Stocks edge higher in early trading on Wall Street

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks rose modestly Monday on Wall Street. Investors were encouraged by signs of progress in talks to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect in two weeks and a prediction of steady economic growth next year.

On the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, stock traders paused for a minute of silence at 9:15 a.m. EST to remember the 20 children and seven adults killed Friday in a gunman's rampage through a Connecticut elementary school.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 59 points at 13,194 as of 9:54 a.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed eight points to 1,421 and the Nasdaq composite index rose 14 points to 2,985.

Banks and technology stocks were among the best-performing stocks in the opening minutes.

In Washington, there appeared to be movement in long-stalled talks over tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1, known as the "fiscal cliff."

House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, offered $1 trillion in higher tax revenue over 10 years and an increase on the top marginal income tax rate for people making $1 million per year, to 39.6 percent from 35 percent.

If congressional Republicans and the White House can't reach a deal by Jan. 1, tax cuts enacted a decade ago for all Americans will expire, and government programs will be cut across the board. The combination could lead to a recession.

Wall Street has been relatively calm in recent weeks, but David Kelly, chief global strategist for J.P. Morgan Funds, said that by Friday the market will be "squarely focused on what is or is not happening in Washington."

He suggested in a note to clients that the markets will not have "priced in" any outcome, "setting the stage for a market rally with an agreement and a slump with stalemate."

Clearwire slid 12 percent, or 41 cents, to $2.96 after Sprint announced terms of its buyout deal for the wireless Internet access company. Sprint's price of $2.97 per share was below Clearwire's closing stock price Friday.

A survey of top business economists released Monday by the National Association for Business Economics found that most expected modest economic growth in 2013, led by rising demand for housing.

Later this week, investors will get data on housing starts and existing home sales, plus a final read from the government on economic growth from July through September.

Personal income and spending figures out Friday could offer a read on consumer spending behavior at the start of the holiday shopping season, Kelly wrote to clients.

Megacity China: the ultimate in urban migration

Joanna Carver, reporter

42-33095398.jpg

(Image: Wu Hong/EPA/Corbis)

NO, YOU haven't slipped into a dream within a dream within a dream. This megacity, which you'd be forgiven for thinking is the dream-limbo city featured in the movie Inception, is Qingdao. It won the accolade of being China's most liveable city in 2009 and 2011. It is home to 8.7 million people. One of the main criteria for the prize is that the city must have a beautiful environment.

Chinese slang for urban sprawl is tan da bing, which means "spreading pancake". The pancake sure has spread rapidly since the country's economic reforms of the 1970s and 80s. These reforms have caused the middle class in China to steadily grow, and led to much of the rural population migrating to cities. By 2025, it is estimated that a total of 1 billion Chinese will live in urban areas. As of now, the country has at least 160 cities with over 1 million people. The US has nine.

Of course this means more housing, more public transportation and consequently more pollution. It's home to a number of cement and coal factories spewing filth into the atmosphere. (Qing, ironically, translates as "lush" or "green".)

Only 1 per cent of China's urban population is breathing air considered clean by European Union standards. According to the World Bank, about 375,000 people a year die prematurely because of horrendous air quality, with another 60,000 dying early due to unclean drinking water.

China aims to generate 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, so in August this year its government committed to spending $290 billion to help achieve that. The country is now the world's largest maker of wind turbines and is increasingly focused on solar and nuclear energy. The goal is to clear the skies over the spreading pancake, not to stop the spread itself.

Mandela undergoes successful gallstone surgery

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela underwent a successful surgery to remove gallstones Saturday, the nation's presidency said, as the 94-year-old anti-apartheid icon is still recovering from a lung infection.

Doctors treating Mandela waited to perform the endoscopic surgery as they wanted to first attend to his lung ailment, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement. Mandela has been hospitalized since Dec. 8.

In the procedure, a patient usually receives sedatives and an anesthetic to allow a surgeon to put an endoscope down their throat, authorities say. The surgeon then can remove the gallstones, which are small, crystal-like masses that can cause a person tremendous pain.

"The procedure was successful and Madiba is recovering," Maharaj said, using Mandela's clan name as many do in South Africa as a sign of affection.

Occasionally, a patient who undergoes the same medical procedure Mandela just had may need to have an additional surgery to have the gallbladder removed, according to medical experts. However, Maharaj's statement offered no other details about what additional care Mandela may require, nor did it suggest when he could be released from the hospital.

Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president, was admitted last week to a hospital in South Africa's capital, Pretoria, the government has said. At first, officials said Mandela was undergoing tests and later they acknowledged he had been diagnosed with a lung infection.

The Nobel laureate has a history of lung problems, after falling ill with tuberculosis in 1988 toward the tail-end of his 27 years in prison before his release and subsequent presidency. While doctors said at the time the disease caused no permanent damage to his lungs, medical experts say tuberculosis can cause problems years later for those infected.

South Africa, a nation of 50 million people, reveres Mandela for his magnamity and being able to bridge racial gaps after centuries of white racist rule.

This hospital stay, his longest since leaving prison in February 1990, has sparked increasing concern about a man who represents the aspirations of a country still struggling with race and poverty.

Following the chaos that surrounded Mandela's stay at a public hospital in 2011, the South African military took charge of his care and the government took over control of the information about his health. However, public worries over Mandela have grown as government officials contradicted themselves in recent days about Mandela's location, raising questions about who is actually treating him.

On Saturday, the South African National Editors' Forum issued a statement criticizing the government for not being straightforward with journalists about Mandela's hospitalization. The forum said that journalists had been working with the government to set up guidelines on how to handle covering Mandela in his waning years, though state officials ultimately declined to sign off on the agreement.

"Senior government representatives have sought to justify misleading statements about the circumstances surrounding Mr. Mandela's whereabouts on the basis of irresponsible conduct by print and broadcast news organizations," the statement read. "Nothing could be further from the truth."

The editor's forum includes members from newspapers, television broadcasters and radio stations in South Africa, as well as the Foreign Correspondents Association of Southern Africa.

Mandela largely retired from public life after serving one five-year term. He last made a public appearance when his country hosted the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament. Mandela has also grown more frail in recent years, with his grip on politics in the nation ever slackening.

96% Chasing Ice

All Critics (53) | Top Critics (19) | Fresh (51) | Rotten (2)

The most important documentary of the year.

"Chasing Ice" is a grand adventure, a visual amazement and a powerful warning.

If you're looking for eye-popping evidence that the world's glaciers are melting, don't miss the small-scale but spectacular documentary, Chasing Ice.

The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful.

The movie might have given us a bit less of Balog and a bit more of the startling sequences he produced.

Though the filmmaker's point of view on the matter seems quite clear, Orlowski does smartly acknowledge counterarguments against climate change without dwelling on them.

A few scientists pop their heads in here, a few charts are deployed, but Chasing Ice is powered primarily by the imagery, stark, irrefutable evidence that the planet is warming, not in one or two isolated places but everywhere.

"Chasing Ice" is a beautiful film to watch, especially on the big screen. But the documentary's visual pleasures come with a heavy dose of guilt.

It's sobering stuff but the film's impact is somewhat diminished by Orlowski's reverential profile of Balog, who continues to crusade despite the toll his endeavours have taken on his body.

The documentary feels a little slight but the images speak for themselves ...

Is this about the hazards of global warming or the awesomeness of James Balog? Not entirely sure...

If any film can convert the climate-change sceptics, Chasing Ice would be it: here, seeing really is believing.

While more detailed scientific analysis and greater discussion of impacts would have been welcome, the film's visual rhetoric is solid.

National Geographic photographer James Balog illustrates climate change with time-lapsed records of glacial retreat.

A project of heroic, Herzogian endeavour. Mad, you might say. But probably not as mad as what the rest of us are doing about climate change: namely almost nothing.

Utterly engaging in its demonstration of the planet's shocking climate change and is thoroughly absorbing to watch.

Chasing Ice is a uniquely visual adventure with a chilling message warmed by Balog's humanity.

Still an eco-sceptic? Clap your eyes on this lot. Awe-inspiring, terrifying, transcendently beautiful, and absolutely weighted with significance for the future of the planet.

This is a well made Documentary that becomes very involving because it's just as much about Balog's journey as it is about global warming.

Makes a convincing case that the story of climate change is best told by pictures, not words.

Despite its dire message about rising carbon dioxide levels polluting the Earth, Chasing Ice is a beautiful film, with stunning visits to snowy realms with deep blue water.

Pictures, of course, say more than a thousand flowcharts or Al Gore's PowerPoint presentations. The images here are as glorious as those in any nature documentary ever made.

"Chasing Ice" is that movie that every environmentally conscious person has been waiting for, if only to show their right-wing relatives who parrot the standard oil-industry-funded line that "the science is still uncertain."

Unification Church quits auto venture with NKorea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- An automaker owned by South Korea's Unification Church says it's quitting its joint venture with North Korea.

Pyeonghwa Motors Corp. general manager Roh Byoung-chun said Friday that Pyeonghwa will sell its 70 percent stake in the 11-year-old joint venture to the North Korean government.

He didn't give a specific reason for the decision but said Pyeonghwa will also close a hotel it has in Pyongyang and try to enter a new business such as retailing.

The auto-making venture is among a number of businesses that the Unification Church has in authoritarian North Korea where very few foreign companies operate.

It makes and sells about 2,000 vehicles annually in the North. It became profitable in 2009 after registering losses for years.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? No. 1 Indiana, which has been playing short-handed all season, is getting reinforcements.

On Saturday, 6-foot-8 forward Hanner Mosquera-Perea and 7-foot center Peter Jurkin are expected to make their college debuts after completing an NCAA-imposed nine-game suspension. All the Hoosiers have to do now is figure out how to work the two freshmen into the lineup against in-state rival Butler.

"I think it's going to be sort of a game feel," Indiana associate head coach Steve McClain said. "I think coach (Tom Crean) has an idea in his mind of how he wants to do this."

He's just not saying what it is.

It's not as if the Hoosiers (9-0) need more help. They lead the nation in scoring (89.1 points) and victory margin (plus-31.7). They are fourth nationally in rebound differential (plus-13.8) and field-goal percentage (51.5). They even lead the Big Ten in defensive field-goal percentage (35.3) and defensive 3-point percentage (26.4) and have won every game by double digits.

Still, things were starting to get thin on the front line.

Derek Elston, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, had surgery Oct. 26 for a torn meniscus in his left knee and though his recovery is going well, he isn't expected back until after Christmas. Last week, sophomore forward Austin Etherington went down with a season-ending fractured left kneecap.

So getting the two freshmen back now will help at this weekend's Crossroads Classic, a double-header featuring Indiana's four best-known basketball programs ? the Hoosiers, two-time national runner-up Butler and two more NCAA tourney regulars, No. 22 Notre Dame and Purdue.

Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin were ordered to sit last month by the NCAA, which determined the two had accepted improper benefits from their AAU coach, Mark Adams. He provided them with $9,702 and $6,003 in plane tickets, meals, housing, a laptop computer, a cellphone and clothing. Mosquera-Perea was told to pay back approximately $1,590 and Jurkin $250.

The NCAA said both players were qualified to receive the benefits from AHOPE, the nonprofit organization Adams uses to help international players obtain travel documents and cover travel costs to the U.S. The problem was that Adams also was considered an Indiana booster because he donated $185 to the Varsity Club from 1986-92, and boosters cannot provide benefits to players.

Now that they are with the team, it won't be as simple as just plugging Mosquera-Perea and Jurkin into a lineup that revolves around national player of the year candidate Cody Zeller. McClain said it may take a little time to figure it all out.

"Peter is a shot-blocker with length whereas Hanner is a shot-blocker who can step out on the perimeter and guard a perimeter player," McClain said. "They both can rebound on a high level, so they bring a lot to the table."

For the Bulldogs, it's another opportunity to slay a basketball behemoth in front of a national television audience.

Butler (7-2) captivated the nation by becoming the first school in Indiana's storied history to reach back-to-back championship games in 2010 and 2011, and the Bulldogs are up to their old tricks again. The Bulldogs have won four straight, five straight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and have already beaten Marquette, North Carolina and Northwestern as rumors have spread that they may be looking to leave the Atlantic 10 and join a new conference with Marquette and other former Big East schools.

Athletic director Barry Collier declined to comment on those rumors Friday.

One thing Butler hasn't done yet: Beat a No. 1 team. In its only other meetings with the nation's top-ranked team, Butler lost at DePaul in February 1980 and at Michigan during the 1964-65 season.

This time, they'll play Indiana five miles from the Butler campus with a team that has steadily improved.

Butler's game plan revolves around two new hotshot shooters ? Rotnei Clarke, the big-shooting guard who was an All-SEC player at Arkansas, and Kellen Dunham. Plus, 7-foot senior Andrew Smith and power forward Khyle Marshall have been playing better. Smith is coming off a 24-point, 10-rebound game at Northwestern, maybe the best game of his career, and Marshall has become an imposing inside threat.

Coach Brad Stevens nearly had Zeller to go along with that group, but he choose Indiana over Butler and North Carolina.

"They're No. 1 for a reason, they're very deep. I think they've got great skill, great athleticism and a selfless superstar," Stevens said of the Hoosiers. "I think they'll be the team to beat all the way through April."

While the Indiana-Butler game is Saturday's main feature, it's not the only popular attraction in town.

Notre Dame forwards Jack Cooley and Scott Martin will lead No. 22 Notre Dame (8-1) against the young Boilermakers (4-5). These schools, just 108 miles apart, haven't met on the basketball court since the 2004 NIT and the series is tied 20-20.

Martin, once part of a Purdue recruiting class dubbed the Baby Boilers, has downplayed the significance of facing his old school.

"I had some good times and some big wins, so I definitely enjoyed myself there (at Purdue)," Martin said. "Obviously, it didn't work out, and I don't think anyone was too thrilled about the way things happened, but I don't think anyone's bitter about it."

The Boilermakers have struggled this season with three losses already to non-power conference schools ? Bucknell, Xavier and last Saturday at Eastern Michigan 47-44. Their only win against a BCS-conference school came at Clemson.
