Early Google Fiber adopter shares thoughts on Google?s new 1Gbps Internet service

Google Fiber Review

Gizmodo?on Monday hosted a chat session with Max Ross, a former software developer and current co-owner of the Fric and Frac restaurant in Kansas City who just got his business hooked up to Google?s (GOOG) shiny new fiber optic network on Sunday. During his chat, Ross said that he was getting average download speeds of around 14Mbps with the new fiber service while he used to get only 0.8Mbps on average from Time Warner Cable (TWC).

While some on the chat said that 14Mbps didn?t seem like all that much on a network promising maximum downloads of 1GBps, Ross replied that his downloads were limited by the speed at which the servers he was connecting to would allow him to extract data. And even so, he said that as servers get upgraded, his average download speeds would only increase. Ross also said that the fiber network would spur more investment and innovation among incumbent ISPs that have gone far too long without significantly upgrading their networks.

?The fact that we now have a choice in our area is HUGE,? he said. ?Until now Time Warner was all we could get. Now companies are going to have to innovate.?

Ross also said he was excited for his fellow Kansas City residents who would soon get access to a high-speed network that blows away their current connection speeds.

?25% of people have dial up or lower or nothing at all,? he explained. ?I?m just happy to see the digital divide getting smaller here. The free tier (minus the construction fee) I think is one of the coolest things about Google Fiber here.?

Syria troops shell Aleppo neighborhoods

(AP) ? Syrian activists say regime forces are shelling districts of Aleppo as fierce clashes continue on the ground for control of the key northern city.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed says the shelling is most intense in the southwestern neighborhoods of Salaheddine and Saif al-Dawla, some of the first areas seized by the rebels when they started last week a push to take over the city after being routed from the capital Damascus.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy fighting and explosions in Aleppo Sunday.

The government said security agents were hunting down armed groups in Salaheddine.

The state-run news agency SANA quoted an Aleppo official as saying that troops would continue to pursue "terrorists" until the city is "purged" of armed groups.

In My Gluten-Free Kitchen with Gretchen Brown, RD | Celiacs in the ...

Gretchen Brown is food-loving, gluten-free Registered Dietitian and author of kumquat, a blog filled with exclusively gluten-free recipes. She has also just written her first cookbook, Fast & Simple Gluten-Free, which will be published in October.

?

?

Welcome! Here?s a quick peek into one of my happy places? to me, a kitchen
is a place for creative juices to flow and for love to be infused into delicious food. My kitchen is both my office and my retreat. As the old saying goes, it is the heart of my home.

Honestly though, as a military family, home changes a lot. So I guess this is the current heart of the home, but one I?ve been grateful to call home for a few years now (basically, a millennium in military terms). I have dreams of the perfect kitchen, built with all of my personal touches, but for now, this one has been good to us and I can?t complain.

?

?

Like any foodie, I love kitchen appliances and gadgets. Here are a couple of my favorites? first, I love my KitchenAid standing mixer. It makes such quick work of beating egg whites, mixing gluten-free doughs, and entertaining my 4-year old. I don?t think I?ve been allowed to turn it on without his assistance for a year or two.

My newest and most current favorite appliance is my Breville toaster-oven. I?ve never before been a toaster-oven kind of girl, but I?m a total convert. It?s so super easy to cook small meals for my son, to easily (and perfectly) toast some breakfast, or to reheat some leftovers. My husband is completely opposed to the microwave. I can?t say I disagree, but warming up the whole oven to reheat one slice of lasagna was not my favorite. But now, voila, warm lasagna is just minutes without heating the entire kitchen? LOVE it!

Then, to the one necessity in any gluten-free baker?s kitchen is the scale. Only since baking gluten-free have I begun to use a kitchen scale. It?s absolutely necessary for making gluten-free flour blends, consistently and successfully substituting flours, and any baking by weight. Now I couldn?t live without it.

?

?

Then of course is the most-used appliance in my kitchen (maybe second to the fridge), the coffeemaker. Typically it?s one of the kitchen things that actually joins us in the car when we move from one place to another. And I love my antique Japanese kitchen clock that we found in a shop when we lived in Hawaii.

?

?

One of the best things about this kitchen is the space? by that I mean both working counter-space and the open and airy-ness of it all. So many bright windows overlooking the forest behind us? makes me happy! I know it?s not enormous by some standards, but after some of the kitchens we?ve endured, this one seems huge.

I did consider photographing my fridge and freezer, but after the recent storms that left us without power for several days we?ve had to start over there. Now it looks like we don?t eat much. I couldn?t give you that false impression. Luckily the frozen (defrosted and refrozen) gluten-free flours were all just fine.

So this is my space? where I?ve relished feeding my little family, entertaining friends, testing recipes for my book, developing recipes for the blog and for other freelance jobs, and teaching my son how to love cooking too.

Because talking about food and sharing good recipes seem to be my love language, I can?t leave you without some of the favorites on my blog. I hope you like them!

?

?

Thank you, thank you, Wendy, for including me and my gluten-free kitchen!

State Parks Scandal Leaves Questions About Budgeting Unanswered

Seventy?that?s a big number. Seventy is the number of?state parks?that were on the state budget chopping block, threatening to close their gates back on July 1. Turns out there was an even bigger number that could have prevented any threats of closure: $54 million.

Earlier this year, Governor Jerry Brown approved the park closures as a way to save money, a projected $22 million.

Pio Pico State Park?in?Whittier, was one of them. But thanks to the community and the city council, enough money was raised to save it, at least for one more year. (See?CaFwd video)

In fact, as word spread of the closures, folks in each of the communities where a state park was set to close,?rallied together?to raise money to keep some of them open temporarily. Eventually most were saved from?closure temporarily?when lawmakers added funding to the parks budget at the last minute.

But wait a minute. What?s this? The Sacramento Bee?recently uncovered?the department is sitting on nearly $54 million in surplus money for as long as 12 years?years when there were job cuts and cutbacks in park hours.

Amid the new developments, director Ruth Coleman and the number two person in command, resigned.

Upon first reading this story, we at California Forward were naturally curious. Promoting transparency and accountability in government is a big part of what we do.

What?s going on here?

If there really is a surplus of $54 million in the parks budget, the state controller and the department of finance should have known about it. The state parks department does not have its hands on its own money. If they wanted to allocate funding to a certain project, they would have to first ask the finance department if the funding is there.

If you didn?t know?the Department of parks has series of operating funds. The two major ones in the story, the Parks and Recreation Fund and the Off Highway Vehicle Fund, are listed on the state department of finance?s?website.?The department of finance website shows reserves for the last three years.?But these funds could already encumbered, meaning already committed to future projects.

So, where was the surprise surplus in all this, since the state controller and the Department of Finance should have had it in their books? The story becomes not merely about government transparency, but about what enabled the department to hide such a big amount.

The Sac Bee reported:

?The moves come in the wake of a scandal, revealed by The Bee on Sunday, in which a deputy director at State Parks carried out a secret vacation buyout program for employees at department headquarters last year. That buyout cost the state more than $271,000.?

John Laird, secretary of the state Natural Resources Agency, which oversees State Parks, told The Bee it remains unclear who is to blame for the surplus, and whether it is linked to the vacation buyout.

HTC Facebook phone may hit in 'mid-2013': Bloomberg

12 hrs.

One tech industry rumor so persistent there's no way it's totally NOT true is that there's a Facebook phone in the works, and that HTC is developing it. According to a?Bloomberg report on Wednesday, the due date for this unconfirmed phone is now "mid-2013."

"BREAKING: Facebook is said to work with HTC on a mobile phone for mid-2013," read the message from the Bloomberg West video team ? fittingly served up on Facebook. A similar post hit Twitter at the same time, along with?a video containing more details.?

"Sources with knowledge of the matter say the companies had intended to release the device as early as at the end of this year, but pushed back the timetable to give HTC more time to work on other products," said anchorperson Emily Chang, who then interviewed tech reporter Tom Giles about the scoop.

Giles didn't have a lot more to say on the subject of the new phone, however. Instead, he discussed mobile software developers from Apple who have gone over to Facebook to work on improving the Facebook iPhone app (infamously held in low regard by many).

Giles didn't connect the Apple folks to the Facebook phone project.?He did suggest that, like previous reports, the Facebook phone's OS would likely be Android, but deeply redesigned to suit Facebook's needs.?

This Android-based approach is similar to the way Amazon redesigned Android for its Kindle Fire tablet ? and what Amazon very well may be doing for its own rumored smartphone.

HTC, who we've reached out to, is currently mum on the subject, and Facebook is sharing with reporters a version of the tune it's been singing for ages. It currently goes, "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We?re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."

(A couple of years back, it was, "...?with operators, hardware manufacturers and app developers to bring Facebook to mobile phones in a variety of unique and exciting ways.")

Either way you slice it, two things are true:?

1) Facebook needs to figure out this mobile thing.?

2) Figuring out this mobile thing is really hard.

Facebook's tightest ally may be Apple, especially now that there's deep Facebook integration on Macs (with OS X Mountain Lion) and on iPads and iPhones that upgrade to iOS 6 this fall. But while Facebook use via iPhone may surge with the features, Facebook doesn't make money directly from that interaction, since the social network can't exactly serve up ads inside of Apple's own system interface.

The minute a Facebook phone is unleashed, Facebook's best bud will become its fiercest competitor. This is almost the definition of a catch-22.

So what's the real reason for the delay? "To give HTC more time to work on other products," like Bloomberg said? HTC has been struggling a bit, so it is possible that it needs to regain momentum in the mainstream Android market. But that's also a good argument for HTC to rush to get a Facebook phone in the market. It could be Facebook who is delaying, trying to get its strategy in order before it makes an irrevocable move, straight into Apple's crosshairs.

Down Home Antiques: Hunting in Alameda

The last few months have been very busy for us at Down Home.? We went on two buying trips to Texas and New England;??had a space at?two weekend antique?shows - Three Speckled Hens and Remnants of the Past, and had our 13th Birthday Open House! Of course that means alot of preparation and planning and time! While it's fun, it can be exhausting too! ?When the last customer left our store the day of?our 13th Birthday?open house, I thought, "We did it!!!!"?Our busy string of events was over and we had a few weeks to relax a bit!?

Just days later we loaded up our trailer and headed to Big Sur, our annual camping trip with the kids and grandkids!? Of course, as we were planning the camping trip, my mind started to wander a bit...Hmmm, Alameda Points?Antique Faire?is not all that far from Big Sur!!!?I guess I'm not that tired!!!? Our?camping reservation started on?Sunday, the day of Alameda, so wouldn't it make sense to drive up on Saturday, stay the night in Alameda, go to the flea market Sunday morning and then meet the family in Big Sur??Of course it would!!!? So we did it.
?

? ??? ???

That was only my second time going to Alameda, so I was excited to go and see what treasures I could find.? I started off?my purchases with?this adoreable galvanized metal pet house.? It originally was probably a dog house, but I was thinking it would be a cute house for my bunny, Sunday.

??

?? Then we found this great galvanized metal Church sign!? I love old church signs and I love galvanized metal, so you can imagine my excitement! I have another church sign for sale in Down Home right now -it's wood with old gold lettering!?
? ?
As we continued our hunt, I found a beautiful harvest colored painting in a wonderful craftsman frame - I may save that for the Fall!? Then a boat paddle with green paint, and a blue and white quilt from a dealer who also had some embalming equipment.? I loved the standing?embalming tool?tray, but the thought of it made me a bit squeamish, so I utimately passed.
As we continued, I ended up with an early child's rocker with old red paint, an Eastman/Kodak photograph paper cutter, a leather courier pouch, some vintage?fishing flies, and a vintage corset. Yeah, I was sort of all over the board with my purchases that morning!? That's what I love about antiquing; you never know what you might find and what you'll come home with!

Our work at Alameda was done! So, off we went to Big Sur, where I found the best treasures of all!!!

Trusts and Estates: 7 Tips for Estate Planning

You wouldn?t want to leave your family intestate when that inevitable time comes.? That?s why you have to have foresight and protect their future by preparing and arranging for the distribution of your properties or estate.? That is what estate planning is all about?properly taking care of your properties that you leave behind to your loved ones, whether they are family or friends.

There are things you should consider in estate planning to minimize uncertainties over the administration of a probate and get the most out of the value of the estate by reducing taxes and other expenses.

1. Identify a temporary guardian to take care of your children just in case you are unable to do so.? Appointing permanent guardians will be specified in your will and will take effect on your death.? There are available documents that will fill the void left in most estate plans.

2.? Everyone over 18 years of age needs an estate plan.? Encourage your children, friends and relatives to have an estate plan.? It doesn?t need to be complicated.? Besides, incapacity and death aren?t just for old people.?

3.? If you have pets, consider setting up a trust for their care so they won?t be put in a shelter or put to sleep.?

4. Consider using an asset protection trust to protect your children?s inheritance from divorce, bankruptcy, and lawsuits.?

5. Identify who gets what.? If you fail to do so in a will, laws governing your domicile will determine who gets your assets, including your non-financial assets.

6. Think of ways to minimize taxes on the amounts your beneficiaries will inherit by using tax-efficient strategies.? A common practice is leaving your taxable assets to charitable institutions and your tax-free assets (such as Roth retirement accounts, life insurance and after-tax savings) to your other beneficiaries.? Another practice to reduce your taxable estate is by gifting amounts to your beneficiaries while you?re still alive?nontaxable gifts are under $13,000 for each beneficiary.

7.? Most often than not, your beneficiaries stand to lose a large amount of money to estate and income taxes. Consider offsetting taxes with the proceeds from your life insurance.? For example, your estate planner has estimated that your beneficiary will owe the government $1 million in estate and income taxes; you can buy a life insurance plan for $1 million and name the affected party as the beneficiary.? Life insurance proceeds are tax-free so the entire $1 million can now be allotted to pay the taxes owed.

Learn more on the benefits of estate planning and how to efficiently make it work for your beneficiaries by working with an estate planning attorney.? It is best to work with a local attorney for he/she is more knowledgeable with the laws of the area or state where you reside.

In the event the days set out to get shorter, the darkness may drive us inside from your porches, patios or decks. Don't despair - modern outdoor lighting can lengthen your day and dramatically extend the new in our outdoor living spaces. The initial step, as with all project, should be to plan. Find out how to require to use this space beyond the, and just what lighting would you like to need? Modrern lighting ideas may well be summarized in four categories:Security lighting is called for in highly vulnerable zones of your belongings. Which is bright and infrequently motion activated, keep it a little distance from living areas making sure that it's not distracting. Alternatively, keep your security lighting on an manual on/off switch so as to override automatic illumination.Task lighting is made for performing situations for instance grilling or walking safely all around steps and along paths. You ought to place task lighting amongst your eyes and also the object that must be lighted and should take care that it does not glare. An overly bright light will blind rather than guide. Accent lighting adds drama or can highlight an unusual feature. Contemporary wall lighting , for example can illuminate an interesting piece of statuary. Silhouetting, achieved by placing a light between an object and a fence or wall, dramatically displays an unusual tree or bush.General or ambient lighting provides overall illumination so that people feel comfortable and look good. The most magical of lighting imitates what is found in nature - moonlight or starlight. Moonlighting is produced by hanging lights in mature trees, pointing downward to produce a dappled effect, as if the area were lit by a full moon. The look of starlight can be achieved through the use of flickering candles, sprinkled here and there throughout the space, or by suspending tiny lights in the branches of a tree to create a sparkling night time canopy. Of course, there are many other attractive types of light - some just plain fun!No matter what type of lighting you choose, it will be powered by one of these sources.Fire is the oldest source of light and considered by some to be the most romantic. Flames, produced by candles or oil-burning lamps, are warm and flattering to faces, and have a hypnotic effect that induces calm and relaxation. Firelight on reflected surfaces such as ponds, mirrors and even gazing balls is a particularly effective way to create atmospheric lighting and enhance the impression of light.Try snaking a row of candles along a garden path or suspending them in glass jars from branches. An array of tiki burning torches can add an exotic touch to your patio area. Although torches are designed to withstand a tolerable quantity of wind, it's perfect to provide as often protection as they possibly can in different open flame and never leave one unattended. Solar-powered lights are a fairly easy and portable choice for outdoor lighting. Some lights use a collector panel which might be concealed behind shrubbery, while other people contain their own personal energy cell and absorb the sun's rays even on a cloudy day. Battery-operated and rechargeable units are often wireless and i really portable whereas in use.Line-powered or hard-wired lights are linked to the electrical system of your private home. Weatherproof lamps could be plugged straight into an outdoors socket. Wire for lighting that could be away from the residence runs through buried conduits. Essentially the most permanent of outdoor lighting, it's also greatest expense, sometimes costing throughout thousands of pounds. It must be installed by a widely known electrician.Low-voltage units also join with the electrical system of your private home, so they are fitted which has a transformer that reduces the electrical current from 120 volts to some safer level of 12 volts. Although these are less durable than line-powered fixtures, they can be a whole lot $15 and so are best for a smallish outside space where only short cable runs are required. These are manufactured for a fairly easy do-it-yourself installation.Whatever your lighting choice, keep the above mentioned tips in your mind:Less is so much more in lighting. Be subtle: make an attempt to hide lights when in doubt and work with a low watt bulb. Avoid setting lights in straight lines up and down paths, drives or patio edges. This "airport runway" effect is an exceptionally common error. Yellow lights are unflattering to both people and plants. When in doubt, install blue-white bulbs or purchase daylight-blue filters for your personal fixtures.Position outside lights where the mice are easily accessible for changing lamps. Owning long-life outdoor bulbs is going to make the maintenance that much easier. With any unit requiring electricity, utilize the protection of ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) for outdoor circuits. Don't so be the sun dictate using your back yard. Get outside at night and light up the night!

(AP) ? With a floating target in the River Thames and a set of giant Olympic rings overhead, Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson took turns whacking balls at a makeshift green.

Golf will likely look a little different when it's included at the Olympics for the first time in more than 100 years at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, but not like this.

"Courses usually don't move this much, but it's definitely going to be fun," Garcia said of the stunt Monday under London's historic Tower Bridge.

So will golf at the next Olympics.

"It would be really cool to be part of the opening ceremony," Johnson said. "Really cool."

Garcia pitched three out of five shots onto the artificial green with a lob wedge from about 75 yards. Johnson nailed two, or maybe it was three.

Even the players weren't sure where some of the purple balls ? the color of the London Olympics ? ended up.

"I thought you were going to make it soft," Johnson said as practice shots bounced off the bright green turf and into the river.

Behind the floating green, curious Londoners peered over the edge of the famous bridge in bright evening sunshine to see what was going on.

There was even a long-jump style slow clap for the players as they took their shots. Nothing like the silence when golfers tee off at Augusta National, or any other top course.

While organizers haven't yet settled on the format for golf in 2016 ? maybe stroke play, maybe match play ? both players were excited for its inclusion.

"I think it's going to be very special if I can represent my country," said Johnson, who is from the U.S. "Being an Olympian is more about being an athlete and being part of something more than just you."

Garcia, who is from Spain, remembered the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as his favorite games. No surprise.

He also remembered the Spanish football team's late win in the gold-medal match that year.

Johnson was all about the U.S. "Dream Team" in Barcelona.

"Those moments stick," Garcia said. "After these Olympics go by it will be the one we're in and everyone will be talking about it."

Golf, like tennis, will get top players more used to playing for themselves into the Olympic spirit when it returns for the first time since 1904 in Rio. And while Garcia and Johnson agreed a major title was still the ultimate prize in their sport, the Olympics was something unique for a golfer.

Garcia said he would take a silver medal over second place at a major any day. Johnson wasn't sure what he'd prefer: an Olympic gold medal or a win at a top non-major like the Players Championship.

"I don't know, that's a tough one," he said.

The pair also expressed sympathy for Adam Scott after the Australian's late collapse at the British Open on Sunday.

Garcia and Johnson have both experienced agonizing slumps at majors while in position to win.

"Unfortunately, I've been in a similar situation and I really feel for him. You've got to look at the positives," said Garcia, who sent Scott a text message to show his support. "Unfortunately, this game is a game of inches."

Staples president alludes to 10-inch Amazon tablet, among other versions

Amazon Kindle Fire

The president of U.S. retail for Staples has thrown more fuel onto the blaze that is the Amazon Kindle Fire -- specifically, the next version (or versions) of the online retailer's Android-based tablet.

Reuters reports that Demos Parneros says Amazon "is to introduce up to five or six tablet SKUs," and they we will see different sizes, including a 10-inch model.

It's important to note the use of the words "up to," meaning we may as as many as five or six, or as few as one or two. Also, note that the Reuters report says "five or six tablet SKUs." An SKU is a "stock-keeping unit," so we could be talking two or three versions of a single model. For example, 16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte versions of a single tablet would mean three SKUs. So it's unlikely we're looking at a 5-, 6-, 7-, 8- and 9-inch versions of a Kindle Fire tablet. (Though if we were talking about Samsung here, it wouldn't be out of the question.

Regardless, yes, we'll most likely see an improved Kindle Fire this year.

Dear Wheaton College Biology department faculty: Please correct Ryken?s mistake and/or lie regarding Plan B

TO: Dr. Jennifer Busch, Dr. Raymond Lewis, Dr. L. Kristen Page, Dr. Pattle Pak-Toe Pun, Dr. Nadine Folino Rorem, Dr. Rodney Scott, Dr. Gregory Vanden Heuvel

RE: Your college president is misrepresenting Plan B, either due to ignorance or intentionally for political reasons.

This is the sort of thing that ought to be mortifying for scientists at an institution of higher education:

Wheaton President Philip Ryken said that while evangelicals do not ascribe to the Catholic teaching against artificial birth control, the mandate requires coverage for so-called ?morning after? pills like Plan B, to which the college objects. Ryken said Plan B is an ?abortion-inducing? drug, though studies show that the pill apparently does not cause abortions.

Ryken invoked Francis Schaeffer, describing Wheaton as ?co-belligerents? with the Catholic bishops. That?s not encouraging. Schaeffer?s culture-war disciples don?t have a long track record of respect for facts that don?t fit into their predetermined political agenda. They tend to be ?belligerents? ? warriors ? far more concerned about winning arguments and elections than they are with those ?absolute truths? Schaeffer was always on about.

But still, the facts are the facts are the facts, whether or not Ryken or the bishops care about them. And your college president has his facts wrong ? publicly, proudly and defiantly.

That?s not cool. It makes Wheaton look bad. It makes each of you, personally, look bad. It makes the church look foolish (and not in a good, 1 Corinthians 1:27, kind of way). It makes the church look dishonest.

And it makes Ryken look less concerned with actually being ?pro-life? than with posing as such.

What he is saying is just not right. It?s not factually right, and it?s not morally right. Choose whichever flavor of moral consideration you like ? biblical Christianity or your professional ethical codes as scientists. Either way, what Ryken is saying is indefensible.

Perhaps one of you could talk to him about that. Or, given the apparent politicization of the president?s office at Wheaton, perhaps one of you could speak to whomever it is that you think might be able to speak to him.

That?d be swell. Thanks.
