Motorola Mobility to slash 4,000 jobs

(Reuters) - Motorola Mobility, which was bought by Google Inc for $12.5 billion, will cut 20 percent of its workforce and shut nearly a third of its offices worldwide, a spokeswoman for parent company Google Inc said on Monday.

"Motorola is committed to helping them (the employees) through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs," the Google spokeswoman said.

The world's No.1 search engine agreed to buy Motorola Mobility last year, aiming to use Motorola Mobility's patents to fend off legal attacks on its Android mobile platform and expand beyond its software business.

Google had previously reserved its comments on Motorola Mobility's future but is now outlining the first steps to turn the company around, under which the ailing cellphone maker will lay off 4,000 employees.

One-third of the jobs lost will be in the United States, but the company has not specified where or what facilities would be affected.

Earlier the New York Times reported Google's plan and said it was looking to shrink operations in Asia and India, by not just exiting unprofitable markets but also stopping making low-end devices and focusing on a few cellphones instead of dozens.

Motorola Mobility, which has 94 offices throughout the world, will center research and development in Chicago, Sunnyvale, California and Beijing.

In addition to the planned cuts, Google has downsized Motorola Mobility's management, letting go 40 percent of its vice presidents, but has also hired new senior executives, the New York Times said.

Miami Dolphins star involved in alleged domestic violence

(Getty)

Chad Johnson, the wide receiver who is as well known for his off-the-field antics as his ability to catch the ball, was arrested over a domestic violence dispute. Now playing for the Miami Dolphins, Johnson was arrested in Davie, Fla., for allegedly headbutting his wife.

The Miami Herald reports the couple got into an argument when Evelyn Lozada, whom Johnson married on the Fourth of July, because she found a receipt for condoms in their car. While parked in their driveway, Johnson allegedly headbutted her.

"She has a pretty good-sized laceration on her forehead," Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle told the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins released a short statement about the arrest.

"We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering all the relevant information," team spokesman Harvey Greene told Pro Football Talk via email.

Though Johnson was arrested in college, he has not been arrested since joining the NFL.

Johnson and Lozada were heavily featured on the season premiere of "Hard Knocks," the HBO reality show that chronicles an NFL team through training camp. Johnson was reprimanded by coach Joe Philbin for the language he used during news conferences last week.

As he walked out of the Dolphins' training facility on the first episode of "Hard Knocks," Johnson jokingly told team officials, "I'm going to get arrested this weekend."

When contact by the Miami Herald, Johnson's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment.

Relationship and Marriage Advice | The Gottman Relationship Blog ...

Following over 35 years of research, Dr. Gottman has discovered something very surprising. He now understands ?something that is counter-intuitive to many of us. Even those who are aware of its occurance in our everyday relationships rarely pay it any attention. What are we talking about? Dr. Gottman calls it the sliding door moment. Sliding door moments are the seemingly inconsequential everyday moments filled with the words we haphazardly throw back and forth at each other, accompanied by little evanescent pains, frustrations, joys, and laughter, flying through our minds and our hearts, that make or break the most important relationships in our lives.?

Most of us focus on the blow-outs: the shouting matches and door slamming competitions, what the British adorably and somewhat incomprehensibly refer to as "rows." According to Dr. Gottman's studies, this is both totally understandable, and utterly ludicrous if we want to truly solve the problems at the source of these awful fights.

Dr. Gottman's findings shared in his upcoming book build on previous conclusions that he has shared about his research in his earlier publications, particularly The Seven Principles for Making MarriageWork and The Science of Trust. During what he refers to as ?sliding door moments,? when one partner bids for the other?s attention, relationships are made or broken. During the everyday moments we share (or try to share!) with our partner, from ?I love you? to ?Did you see that crazy jerk cut in front of me?,? we expect or hope for a return ? a hug or a kiss, shared laughter, or simple acknowledgment.?

When our partners do not respond and turn away or against our bids for emotional connection, we begin to lose trust in them. Though Dr. Gottman explains that the reasons for failed connection are often the result of mindlessness, not malice, they add up (or take away) from a relationship over time, creating complex and all-encompassing systems of Positive or Negative Sentiment Override.

In his upcoming book on trust and betrayal? What Makes Love Last, Dr. Gottman does more than show awareness for the unending emotional toll of failed attempts at bids - what he refers to as the unsuccessful sliding door moments. He gives readers the tools to helping each other to crack that door open and leave it permanently ajar. If you are tired of peering through the keyhole into your partner?s life, you simply cannot trust them. Dr. Gottman?s advice is to listen to that feeling.?

If you find yourself asking questions like: ?Is my partner just selfish,? ?does my partner care about me at all,? ?can I trust my partner,? then reading What Makes Love Last may change your life. Explaining the ways in which you can begin to measure the trust in your relationships in order to make more informed decisions about the people who you do decide to trust, Dr. Gottman builds on his findings on sliding door moments, which he describes in this video:?

Have a great weekend,

Practical Home Improvement Techniques Plans ? For Adults | Arty Apt

Making improvements in your home is one way to increase its value. Home improvements are so popular with homeowners that a whole industry has grown to serve this market. They call this process ?home flipping? and a lot of people make money buying ?fixer uppers?, improving them, and reselling them at a profit. You need to break your home improvement efforts into different categories and see what?s needed in your home. Pick an easy to do project that will help you cut the cost of your utility expenses. One area that?s important to consider has to do with the safety of your home and any health issues that should be addressed. These two areas will be explored in this report.

Your hot water system is a good place to start lowering your utility bills. It affects your whole home. The first step is to do some exploration and find all the spots where your hot water pipes are exposed. What you will do is buy very inexpensive insulation and cover all the exposed hot water piping. This will prevent the hot-water pipes from losing heat as they do when they are exposed. You want to stop this from happening and, by wrapping your pipes, your hot water will stay hot for longer periods of time. This will not only cause your hot water heater to run less often, but the hot water it does make will stay hot longer. There are a number of good reasons for running a dehumidifier in your basement. You do want to be sure the basement area stays dry all year round. One of the most common problems in basements is mold, and you can prevent that from happening. Your basement?s ability to maintain a lower summertime temperature will be much greater, as well. If your basement is finished, then this type of climate control will keep your drywall and wood paneling in better condition. Pop over to 91789 bail bonds for logical data.

Most homeowners have a wish list of home improvements they would like to perform, but they are usually prohibitively expensive. And so, most of us have to settle for smaller home improvement projects that can actually be classified as decorating instead of remodeling. Fortunately, it isn?t that expensive or difficult to make a dramatic change in a room by changing just a few of its key features. A good example is in the bathroom. Add newer, more modern fixtures ? such as faucets ? and maybe a new mirror that has good lighting around its perimeter. Take a look at your windows and see what you can do with the curtains. Do not forget about painting and trimming changes, as well.

If you want to do your own home improvements, then do not rely so much on if you can do it because many can be done by you. Just be patient about the whole thing should you find yourself needing to hire an expert.

A personal recommendation is always the best, and just make sure you trust the person you are asking.

Maine programs train next generation of leaders ? Business ...

AUGUSTA, Maine ? When Leadership Maine was launched by the nonprofit Maine Development Foundation 20 years ago, staff would recruit people to attend the training program by speaking at Kiwanis and Rotary clubs.

Now, Cheryl Miller, who coordinates the yearlong program, says she has to turn away applicants, most of whom are referred by Leadership Maine alumni or required to attend by the businesses or nonprofit organizations for which they work.

In addition, Leadership Maine, a statewide endeavor whose alumni include former Gov. Angus King and former Attorney General Steve Rowe, has spawned regional leadership programs which have followed its model. Those who have completed the programs, both regionally and through MDF, describe it as life altering, a response that does not surprise Miller, whose own professional course was changed when she attended Leadership Maine.

MDF launched Leadership Maine in 1993 when one of its board members, then-CEO of Verizon in Maine Ed Dinan, suggested creating such a training institute. Dinan had attended a similar program in Rhode Island.

Leadership Maine?s goal was to prepare 1,000 leaders for work in business, nonprofit and civic realms. To date, it has graduated 766. But if the graduates of the regional spin-off leadership programs are counted, the thousand leader goal has been met and exceeded.

?It really was designed because the same leaders were always around the table,? Miller said, a complaint heard in many Maine communities that struggle to find people willing to serve on committees, boards and in local government.

The idea, Miller said, is to build a small army of leaders.

?If we had a thousand leaders with a common base of understanding, we could really move mountains,? she said.

Leadership Maine and the regional programs, such as the Midcoast Leadership Academy based at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center in Belfast, typically accept people who already are engaged in their communities and perhaps poised to take the next step. It exposes them to people and institutions that play key parts in civic and economic life in Maine.

The programs typically run for a year, beginning with a two-day retreat in the summer, then a daylong seminar or field trip each month after that, culminating in a final, two-day event.

Midcoast leadership

Lisa Roming, a research and program officer at the Unity Foundation, a philanthropic nonprofit organization built by the late Unity businessman Bert Clifford, attended Midcoast Leadership Academy and graduated in 2007. She describes herself as ?sort of the poster child? for the program.

?I can say that it truly, truly, truly changed ? both personally and professionally ? my life,? Roming said. Though she considered herself an accomplished professional when she signed up, Roming described herself as a ?stage manager? type.

?My career choices had been in a support role, not a leadership role,? she said. But while inquiring about another course being offered at the Hutchinson Center, she was told about the Midcoast Leadership Academy and thought, ?I?ll give it a whirl.?

Reflecting back on that choice, Roming, 51, said, ?It absolutely turned out to be life changing.? She remains in the same job ? a position she loves ? but has been able to expand her role there, in large part, ?Because I have more confidence in myself.?

One area of growth was in public speaking.

?It is amazing to me that five years ago I was afraid to say ?boo? if there were three people in the room,? Roming said. Now she serves on nonprofit boards, speaks at conferences and ?I am a better advocate for my program.?

Other grads are ?stepping up? as well, she said. At a recent civic meeting of some 20 people, Roming counted nine MLA graduates. She also noted that Carole Gartley of Rockland, who is running for the Legislature, is a grad, as is Jim O?Connor of Belfast, who ran last year for mayor of that city.

Jim Gamage Jr., 36, of Rockland, who owns All Aboard Trolley and a temporary workforce business, graduated from MLA in May. ?A couple of buddies of mine took it and liked it,? he said.

As a graduate, he now believes, ?It was one of the best things I?ve done so far. It?s helped me in every aspect of my life.?

Specifically, he said, ?It?s taught me to listen, and to know it?s not selfish to take care of myself first.? Taking time for family, relaxing and ensuring he was getting rest helps him better lead his businesses, he said, which the program helped him learn.

?It?s excellent for networking,? Gamage added. ?It?s made me more aware of what?s going on around me instead of just my little world.? Just about every day he crosses paths with an MLA graduate or two.

Robin McIntosh, who helps coordinate MLA, had completed similar leadership training in Portsmouth, R.I. She stresses the broad approach MLA takes in educating participants about how their communities function.

One day is devoted to studying the judicial system, and when participants visit a local jail and see someone serving time for a drug offense, they will bring what they learn to their later study of the local health care, education and economic development systems.

?It broadens your base of knowledge,? she said, allowing participants to see that ?they?re all woven together. These are the people who are going to be on your planning board, on your city council, the hospital board,? she said, so such knowledge is valuable.

One of MLA?s goals is to foster more cooperation between Knox and Waldo counties, McIntosh said. Dan Bookham, executive director of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce, the organization for which McIntosh works, is a MLA graduate. When the Rockland-based Chamber sought to merge with the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber ? an effort that had failed in the past ? MLA grads on both chamber boards, as well as Bookham?s leadership, helped bring the groups together, McIntosh said.

McIntosh continues to meet regularly with MLA grads.

?There?s a bunch of us who get together for lunch once a month,? she said.

More leaders

Shirley Erickson graduated from the Washington County Leadership Institute in 1998. At the time, she was vice president for student affairs at the University of Maine at Machias.

?The main thing that was helpful was learning additional problem-solving skills,? she said. By meeting with various nonprofit and business leaders, Erickson said she learned that those skills were common, ?regardless of people?s positions.?

Erickson now is executive director of Maine Educational Loan Authority, based in Machiasport and Portland. Looking back, she believes it helped fine-tune the skills she already possessed.

With 250-plus graduates, the Washington County institute has brought forward fresh blood, she said. And, as others noted, there is a fraternity of sorts.

?People recognize who?s participated, and you kind of run into alumni,? Erickson said.

Erickson also attended the Maine Leadership Foundation program in 2000.

Miller said participants in her program typically are evenly split between those working for private businesses and nonprofit organizations or government. Companies such as L.L. Bean, Bangor Savings Bank and Camden National Bank send their top-level managers through the program, as do nonprofits such as Spurwink.

?A huge amount of people from state government? also complete the training.

And there is no arm twisting.

?People pay tuition to go through it,? Miller said. ?It?s about finding out a lot more about what it takes to be a leader today.?

Those denied acceptance to both the regional and Leadership Maine programs are encouraged to continue to remain engaged in their communities and reapply later.

Several of the regional programs were founded by Leadership Maine graduates, Miller said. Leadership Hancock County was founded by Bonnie Sparks, a 1999 graduate of Leadership Maine. Other regional groups include the Bangor Region Leadership Institute, Kennebec Leadership Institute, Androscoggin Development Leadership Institute and the Institute for Civic Leadership in Portland.

There?s even Encore Leadership Corps for seniors, operated by the Maine Development Foundation.

Leadership Hancock County defines leadership as ?the capacity to think and act beyond the boundaries that limit our effectiveness. Leaders are made, not born and leadership itself can be learned through strengthening interpersonal skills, cultivating situational and self-awareness, and building business and community networks.?

Miller said surveys of grads show that participants say the program met or exceeded their expectations. The surveys also show grads often report increased responsibility at work and being more engaged with their community.

Climate Control for Conservatories ? ArticleZio / Dofollow Article ...

We?re all aware of the greenhouse effect and how uncomfortable it could hypothetically be. However, conservatories come with great features that ensure liveable, comfortable, pleasant temperatures. Though, you might not realise it, these features come in a range of shapes you are probably quite familiar with.

Blinds
Blinds are simple, often taken for granted additions; however they are one of the most effective additions for those looking to maintain the temperature in a conservatory. They simply block out the heat or can be used to insulate from the cold. As modern conservatories are essentially all glass, they are more susceptible to heat changes than a normal room. That?s why good blinds can really be a worthwhile investment for the modern conservatory design.

Under floor heating
Of course, keeping the conservatory warm can mean having some form of provision of heating and under floor heating allows you that cosy, warm feel underfoot when you require it. You can choose from electric under floor heating or boiler linked under floor heating ? all of which depends on your circumstances and the way your home is currently heated.

Radiators
The radiator is also a great way to heat your home, and is one of the most popular. However they do have to be placed along the walls of the conservatory. This manner of heating often is seen as an eye sore, though some people don?t mind and it?s a completely subjective decision and depends on conservatory shape as well as its style. For example, a traditional conservatory or orangery would benefit more from radiators than a contemporary conservatory would. Radiators, like under floor heating can be either electric or boiler heated and once again this depends on the way the rest of your home is heated.

Air Conditioning
Of course, you can also place an air conditioning unit in your home. These units are becoming quieter and smaller and so more feasible than ever before. They may cost a little more but they provide probably the best way to keep a conservatory at a comfortable temperature. Furthermore, they allow the most control, so whether you prefer cooler temperatures or a cosy feel, you can choose the temperature you like to the nearest degree.

Glass
The sort of glazing and glass you use can also have a significant effect on the level of heat your conservatory holds. Double glazed glass and better can really save a significant amount on your heating bills and manages to insulate the heat levels of your room. Solar glazing helps to keep your conservatory cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Choose from a range of different kinds of glass when choosing your conservatories, depending on your needs and requirements.

Design
The design of the conservatory, number of windows and doors that can be opened and the direction which the conservatory faces also effects the level of coolness or heat your conservatory can hold. This is of course the simplest form of climate control, but also often one of the most effective and that?s why choosing a high end company for your conservatory design pays off and allows you to create one to fit in with your needs and wants.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of conservatory, contemporary extensions and contemporary conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors.

The Essential Guide to A Lasting Marriage (Relationship ...

The Essential Guide to A Lasting Marriage (Relationship) ? Boundaries

?

In my book ?The Essential Guide to A Lasting Marriage (Relationship)? I deal with 10 ?areas where couples need to establish boundaries. Below is a list of five of those areas, so you can think about how you would like your partner to relate to you and your boundaries and you can ask your your partner what they would like in terms of their boundaries. Some folks like / need more distance and some like / need more connection. ?It is important for couples who want to connect in a positive manner to figure out what they need in terms of distance. ?Below are some situations in which the issue of distance applies:

?

Being upset.

Some folks want people to be around them and others just want to be left alone

?

Being told that you are cared for.

It is important to some people to be reassured on a regular basis that they are cared

for and others feel like it is too much and feel that being reassured is unnecessary.

?

Not talking in the morning.

Some of us are ?morning people? and some of us just want to be left alone.

?

Having individual credit cards

Some people like having their own ?money? and some want to know the other person

is doing.

?

Learning to compromise.

A couple is doing well when they figure out how to talk with each other about difficult

issues and they understand that it is important to learn how to ?meet in the middle?.

?

When I counsel couples I tell them about the ?Platinum Rule? as compared to the ?Golden Rule: The ?Platinum Rule? ?Do on to others I as they would like to be done to;

not what you would like or think that they want.

Mali Islamists cut off suspected thief's hand

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? A spokesman for an Islamist group in northern Mali says a man's hand has been chopped off as punishment for the theft of a motorbike, as hardliners tighten their grip over the vast territory in northwest Africa .

Adnan Abou Walid Saharaoui, spokesman for the jihadist group Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, or MUJAO, said the amputation was carried out Wednesday in the village of Ansongo. Authorities had accused the man of stealing a motorcycle.

Mali's north was overrun by a mix of rebel groups including several allied with al-Qaida following a coup in Mali's capital in March.

Since June, Islamists have exerted full control of the northern half of the country and have imposed Shariah law. They recently stoned an adulterous couple to death.

Romney hammers Obama on accuracy of campaign TV ad

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is charging that President Barack Obama has gone beyond the bounds of acceptable campaign speech with a TV ad linking him to a woman's death from cancer.

Without directly citing an ad run by the pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action, Romney says, quote, "I don't know what happened to a campaign of hope and change. I thought he was a new kind of politician."

Romney says on Bill Bennett's "Morning in America" radio show Thursday that Obama has been airing factually incorrect charges. Yet, he says the ads "just keep on running" and officials "just blast ahead."

Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul labeled the ad linking Romney to a woman's death "despicable." But Priorities USA Action refused to pull the TV spot off the air.

MONEY HELP FROM RAMIT SETHI; HOW TO GET A RAISE ...

Although I met Sethi at the Financial Blogger?s Conference last year, read his book I Will Teach You to be Rich, and subscribe to his newsletter, I had some difficulty understanding his tremendous popularity. Yes, he?s smart, charismatic, and creative, but what was the allure? I opened his latest news blast, read the entire copy, clicked the link, and read that entire copy. Sethi offered a five minute life changing tip.

  • The first email blast title:?The haunting reasons we feel out of control
  • I clicked through to :?New Data, what you told me about control over your life

Maybe he has something here. Are you curious? I certainly was.

How Does Your Salary Match Up?

His readers wrote back in droves about feeling lack of motivation and control in their lives. They had too much debt and not enough income. Some complained that their jobs were too inflexible and others shared that a $5,000 unexpected expense would put them over the edge. Their financial and job stress was palpable.

The solution, according to Sethi was to find an extra $5,000 to improve your life. Although simplistic on the surface, for most readers, an extra $5,000 income per year could be lifestyle changing.

And here?s Ramit Sethi?s starting point to find this extra cash. The solution to feelings of loss of control was elegant:

He implored his readers to compare their current salaries to the averages of their colleagues in similar jobs and then report back.

?Go to my 3 favorite salary sites ??salary.com,?glassdoor.com, and?payscale.com?? and look up the average salaries for your position and experience. Note that we?re using 3 different sites to diversify the data.??Ramit Sethi private list

How to Get a Raise?

Find out how your salary compares with others doing comparable work in your field. This knowledge alone tells you whether there is room for a raise. If the average annual salary for your job title and level of experience is $50,000 and you?re making $42,000, ?you?ve got a starting point to negotiate a higher salary.

I loved this idea. Take this simple exercise and use it as a starting point. If you are paid less than the average, you have concrete data that there?s room for a raise.

I?m a master negotiator and attempt to improve my financial well being through negotiation at any opportunity. Following are basic negotiating strategies to take to your superior when you ask for a raise.

ADVANCE PREPARATION FOR THE SALARY NEGOTIATION MEETING

1. Write down every contribution you make to your organization. What have you done to make money for your firm? How have your efforts propelled the organization forward? Look over any positive reviews, or comments from customers and superiors. What ideas did you put forward that made the institution better? Do not overlook or minimize anything.

2. Schedule a meeting at a convenient time with the decision maker. It?s better to choose a time that?s earlier in the day. Avoid stressful times. After successfully completing a project is a great time to schedule a meeting.

3. Remember, this is a negotiation. Decide in advance how much to request by incorporating your research and then add a bit to that total to allow room for some back and forth.

4. Have a Plan B. Be prepared if your first request is denied, have other alternatives at hand; more vacation time, a smaller raise-8% instead of 10%, one day per week to telecommute, or some other perk.

AT THE SALARY NEGOTIATION MEETING

1. Have a plan. Keep at hand all of your research including comparable salary data and your personal accomplishments.

2. Begin by discussing all of your contributions to the firm.

3. Next talk about the comparable salary statistics.

4. Ask for your top figure (remember, the higher number leaves room for some negotiation).

5. Listen to your boss?s response carefully. Pause. Respond positively to any criticisms. For example, your boss states you?ve been late a few times. You respond by saying, I?ve rectified that former issue and arrive early or on time. Pause.

Browns' first pick Richardson to see specialist

(AP) ? Trent Richardson's ailing left knee may be more seriously injured than the Cleveland Browns thought.

The team issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying that the running back, picked No. 3 overall in April's draft, will see a specialist on Thursday.

The statement says: "Trent Richardson is traveling to Pensacola, Fla., where he will have his left knee further evaluated by Dr. James Andrews tomorrow."

Richardson had arthroscopic surgery on the knee Feb. 3, which caused him to miss some portions of the NFL combine before the draft.

Nevertheless, Cleveland (No. 30 in the AP Pro32) traded up to select Richardson, who helped Alabama win a national championship last season. The Browns signed him to a four-year, $20.5 million contract.

Richardson had impressed coaches in camp but he missed practice Tuesday, when he wore a protective wrap on his leg.

Since returning to the NFL in 1999 as an expansion team, the Browns have had more than their share of misfortune with first-round picks.

Quarterback Tim Couch, picked No. 1 overall in 1999, got battered and bruised in three lackluster seasons. Injuries to his hand and throwing arm contributed to his demise.

Defensive end Courtney Brown, the No. 2 choice overall in 2000, never got into a groove because of a series of leg injuries. Then came running back William Green, who was in scrapes with the law and got stabbed by his fiance. A few years later, tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., missed an entire season after a motorcycle crash.

Last year's top choice, defensive lineman Phil Taylor, is currently recovering from surgery for a torn pectoral muscle and won't be available until midseason.

The Browns open their preseason at Detroit on Friday.

Health Is The Best Wealth We Have : Pool, Scape, Desert

Taking good care of our health is one of the things we must do throughout our lives. We can do this by having a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as doing health and fitness activities that develop our bodies physically. But even with the things mentioned, we are still prone to medical conditions and diseases, thus it is imperative to have regular checkups to know our state health-wise.

It pays to be diligent and cautious all the time for ailments and diseases can strike anytime the least we expect them. A lot of people have lost their lives because of complacency and thinking that they are doing just fine because there were no signs and symptoms but little did they know that some medical diseases and conditions are very conniving and sneaky when they strike such as heart attacks, strokes, cancer and many more.
Being informed is also important since it gives you a foresight on what needs to be done and what are the things to stay away from. Blood pressure should be checked regularly, medical checkups, and blood tests to name a few. There are medical facilities near you and there are also websites that offer tests online such as www.thyroidtest.org, which provide blood tests, lab tests and STD testing.

Our health should never be taken for granted. It should be taken good care of or else, you will just realize that it is already too late.

Knockoffs Can Spark Innovation, Boost Economy, UVA Law Professor's Book Argues

The Knockoff Economy

University of Virginia law professor Christopher Sprigman co-authored a new book, "The Knockoff Economy: How Imitation Sparks Innovation."

Conventional wisdom holds that strong copyright and patent laws are necessary to encourage creativity. Without such protections, the thinking goes, competitors are free to steal ideas, create knockoffs and drain profits from innovators.

Yet a number of major industries ? fashion, cuisine, open-source software, finance, fonts, stand-up comedy and more ? manage to thrive and innovate in the absence of legal protections for intellectual property.

In many of these industries, copying is widespread. And, in many cases, that's actually a good thing, according to University of Virginia law professor Christopher Sprigman.

Sprigman is the co-author of "The Knockoff Economy: How Imitation Sparks Innovation," a new book that explores how certain industries prosper without copyright and patent law, even amidst pervasive imitation.

"I'm not interested in intellectual property law. I'm interested in innovation. I'm interested in creativity," Sprigman said. "The typical story about IP law is that it's the handmaiden of innovation and creativity. That it's the way we incentivize people to engage in creative labor ? but there's a whole world of creativity out there that is motivated by different things. The question is, can you sustain creativity at high levels without intellectual property, or with less IP than we have now? The answer for the book is 'Yes.'"

The book's inspiration arose from a conversation several years ago between Sprigman and co-author? Kal Raustiala, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, about how the fashion industry manages to perform well, despite the prevalence of knockoffs.

Sprigman

Professor Christopher Sprigman

"Copyright doesn't cover fashion designs," Sprigman said. "And so fashion designers are free to copy and take inspiration from their rivals' designs. And there is lots of copying in the fashion industry, but there's lots of innovation and there's lots of profits. We wanted to understand how that was possible."

Sprigman and Raustiala figured out that copying actually allows the fashion industry to set trends and motivate consumers to buy more clothes.

"We don't know a trend until there are lots of copies. That's what makes a trend," Sprigman said. "Copying helps spread a trend and then it helps kill it when there's too much copying. The early adopters flee the trend and they adopt the next trend. So the trend cycle is fueled, in a sense, by copying, and this helps the industry as a whole, though it might in some instances hurt individual designers."

Other industries, such as cuisine, also thrive despite wide freedom to copy.

"You can't really copyright a recipe," he said. "You can't really copyright a dish as prepared, or patent it for that matter. But there's lots and lots of copying. Also lots and lots of innovation in cuisine."

A similar situation can be found in professional football, he said.

There's "lots of innovation in football offenses and defenses ? wide freedom to copy," he said. "In fact, these offenses and defenses are knocked off all the time. But that doesn't stop coaches from innovating, and we explore why."

The book also delves into the world of stand-up comedy, building on an earlier article written by Sprigman and UVA law professor Dotan Oliar. Without intellectual property law to prevent joke theft, comedians police themselves.

"In stand-up comedy, copyright doesn't really provide effective protection for jokes or comedic routines," Sprigman said. "But comedians have developed a system of social norms that discourages joke stealing."

Sprigman cited a 2007 incident at a Los Angeles comedy club in which comedian Joe Rogan publicly accused Carlos Mencia of stealing material from other comics. A video of the confrontation went viral.

"That is a rather public example of what comedians do a lot, which is, they confront each other when they think a joke has been stolen," Sprigman said. "It effectively reduces joke stealing to a level low enough that there is no market failure and comedians feel secure enough in their rights that they will author new material all the time."

One of the biggest proponents of copyright law has been the music industry, which Sprigman says has witnessed a "collapse of social norms against stealing" in little over a decade, with the rise of Napster in 1999 and its successor peer-to-peer networks in subsequent years.

"This has hurt the record companies tremendously. I have no doubt about that," Sprigman said. "The question is, has it hurt music? There's a huge amount of music these days, of very high quality, available to people at a relatively low price. So in some ways we're living in a very fertile period for music even as the record industry is declining."

The book suggests a path forward for the music industry that relies less on tough copyright law and more on some of the strategies employed by other industries covered in the book. One possibility, Sprigman said, would be to rely more on social norms. There is a model for this in the music industry, one pioneered by the Grateful Dead.

The Grateful Dead allowed fans to record their concerts and trade the recordings for free. In return, fans agreed not to share the studio recordings. Other jam bands and their fans followed this model.

"When [fans] share live recordings on peer-to-peer networks, they actually police the sharing of recordings ? typically studio recordings ? that the band has reserved for themselves for sale."

As a result, fans enforce a social norm that the bands would have a difficult time enforcing through copyright, Sprigman said.

"The music community, as a whole, as it changes, might become more like the jam-band community," he said. "The record label executives would certainly be wise to start looking into that."

While some, including the music industry, argue that more copyright laws are needed, Sprigman said the "world is shifting against them."

As evidence, he pointed to the recent defeat of the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act in the United States and the European Union Parliament's rejection last month of an international treaty to crack down on digital piracy and counterfeiting.

"There's a growing awareness around the world that copyright and patent aren't a one-way street, that more copyright and patent aren't always good for society, that there are costs associated with copyright and patent," he said. "There are those who argue that more copyright and patent are necessary. I'm open to these arguments. If I see empirical evidence of it, I'm open to it. I just haven't seen it."

Ernesto spins west over open sea, soaking Jamaica

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Ernesto kept on a westerly course in the Caribbean Sea on Sunday and was expected to strengthen slowly over the next 48 hours, soaking Jamaica as it passed the island on its way to Mexico's Yucatan, U.S. forecasters said.

Wet and windy conditions were felt in Jamaica which caught the outer rain bands of Ernesto, according to Jamaica's emergency management office.

Ernesto's winds and rain failed to dampen the spirits of many Jamaicans who gathered in large street parties in the capital Kingston to watch their star sprinter Usian Bolt race to victory in the 100 meters track final at the Olympics Games.

Tropical storm conditions were possible along the coast of Honduras by late Monday, the National Hurricane Center said. A tropical storm watch advisory was also issued for Grand Cayman.

Ernesto was following a predicted track that should keep it at sea until a forecast landfall, possibly at hurricane strength, over Mexico's Yucatan peninsula on Wednesday.

The storm was 220 miles south-south-west of Jamaica, and 305 miles east of the coast of Honduras at around 5p.m. EDT on Sunday, moving west at about 20 mph with maximum sustained winds around 50 mph.

Heavy rains were expected throughout Sunday in Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. Three to 6 inches were expected in Jamaica and authorities warned of flooding in low-lying areas along the south coast. Showers and thunderstorms, sometimes severe, were possible on the islands of Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire off Venezuela's northern coast.

"Ernesto is forecast to become a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean in a day or two," the U.S. forecasters in Miami said.

Ernesto would be deemed a hurricane if its winds reach 74 mph.

Forecasters expect Ernesto to move into the southern Gulf of Mexico by Thursday but it was too early to know whether it could disrupt oil and gas operations in the gulf.

U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasters said another tropical storm, called Florence, formed on Saturday in the eastern Atlantic and was moving west in open waters. As of early Sunday, forecasters said Florence was about 680 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands.

With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, Florence was the sixth named storm of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, moving west-northwest at 15 mph. Some strengthening was expected over the next day or two.

August and September are usually the most active months of the Atlantic-Caribbean hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

Macau police arrest 150 in casino raids

(AP) ? Macau police said Monday they arrested 150 people in raids at casinos and hotels across the Chinese territory following a spate of violence that raised fears of a revival of gang warfare in the world's most lucrative gambling market.

Police questioned 1,300 people in an exercise named "Operation Thunderbolt 2012" that was carried out with authorities in Hong Kong and mainland China. They would not name the casinos or hotels involved.

The operation follows a spate of murders and the bashing of a veteran operator of casino VIP junkets that had many worried the Chinese territory could see a return to the violence that rocked it the late 1990s. That's when triads, or mafia groups, unleashed a wave of car bombings, assassinations and gangland killings as they battled for control of lucrative casino VIP rooms in the final days of Portuguese colonial rule.

"This was an annual operation held jointly by Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong," said Jacqueline Chan, a police spokeswoman. "The operation didn't have any specific target. Rather, it was aimed at preventing and tackling crime."

Macau, bordered by the southern Chinese province of Guangdong and an hour by ferry west of Hong Kong, is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

After Portugal returned Macau to Chinese rule in 1999, violence abated and the city overtook Las Vegas Strip as the world's most lucrative gambling market, raking in $33.5 billion in casino revenues last year, a 42 percent increase over the year before. Revenue growth has tailed off in recent months as the Chinese economy slows.

Companies operating casinos in Macau include Las Vegas Sands Corp., Wynn Resorts Ltd. and MGM Resorts International.

The recent outburst of violence includes an attack in June on Ng Man-sun, who is recovering in hospital after reportedly being beaten by six men in his own hotel in a dispute over ownership of the property with his ex-lover. Ng is a longtime operator of VIP casino junkets, which lend money to gamblers.

That was followed in July by the deaths of two mainland Chinese men at the five-star Grand Lapa hotel and the killing of a mainland Chinese woman in a residential neighborhood near the Venetian Macao casino. The killings remain unsolved.

Hong Kong police said last week they raided 21 locations in the Asian financial center as part of the operation, arresting 130 people suspected of money laundering, illegal gambling and prostitution. Cash, cars and watches were seized in the raids.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney and the Republican National Committee say they netted more than $101 million last month.

Romney's presidential campaign says in a statement issued Monday that about 26 percent of the money raised in July came in donations of less than $250.

The campaign says Romney, the RNC and state GOP parties have nearly $186 million in cash on hand.

Romney's finance chairman, Spencer Zwick, says Republicans are "well on track to raise the money to be successful in November."

President Barack Obama's campaign report raising $75 million in July in conjunction with the Democratic National Committee. It was the third straight month that Romney and the RNC raised more money than Obama and the Democrats.

GOP-aligned "super" PACs also are raising and spending millions of dollars to defeat Obama.

Knight's future in balance after trading disaster

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Knight Capital Group Inc was fighting for its survival on Thursday after a trading glitch that had roiled markets wiped out $440 million of the firm's capital, forcing it to seek new funding as its shares plunged more than 70 percent in two days.

Some of the company's biggest customers, including TD Ameritrade, the No. 1 U.S. retail brokerage by trading volume, and Fidelity Investments are not routing orders through Knight. Smaller customers also were taking business elsewhere.

The company, one of the largest U.S. market makers, said it is "actively pursuing its strategic and financing alternatives," raising the possibility Knight could be sold or even face bankruptcy.

The troubles at Knight have spooked investors about a potential failure for the firm, which in 2011 was the No. 1 market marker in retail U.S. equity shares traded in NYSE and NASDAQ stocks.

"They have about 48 hours to shore up confidence," said James Koutoulas, chief executive of Typhon Capital Management and lead lawyer for Commodity Customer Coalition, an advocacy group for former customers of MF Global and Peregrine Financial.

The incident and subsequent collapse in the company's stock has cast more doubt on the inner workings of financial markets increasingly driven by electronic trading that regulators and firms are struggling to control.

They include the troubled Facebook IPO in May, the failed IPO of exchange venue BATS Global Markets in March and the Flash Crash in May 2010.

TD Ameritrade, which averaged just over 355,000 trades a day last quarter, is currently not sending orders through Knight as it tests its systems to make sure everything runs smoothly, said Joe Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade.

The company routs about 4.5 percent of its orders through Knight.

"We are monitoring the situation," Kinahan said, adding that as long as Knight remains in good standing with the exchanges, TD Ameritrade will resume sending orders through it.

He said that every client trade that TD Ameritrade sent on Wednesday was filled, because Knight was quick to tell the brokerages to reroute their orders.

Fidelity Investments' brokerage arm on Thursday was not routing customer orders through Knight, according to people familiar with the situation, who also said Fidelity is not having any trouble routing orders as it moves the Knight traffic to other market makers.

Knight is in talks with Silver Lake Partners-backed trading firm Virtu Financial LLC about a possible deal, according to the Wall Street Journal. Knight has approached JPMorgan Chase & Co for financing, according to a report on Fox Business Network. A spokesman for JPMorgan declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Knight Capital also declined comment.

Wednesday's technology breakdown roiled the prices of some 140 stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange, undermining fragile investor confidence in the stability of U.S. stock markets.

From the opening bell on Wednesday, traders across the market noticed something wrong, which Knight later attributed to software problems that caused little-traded shares to rise sharply, some gaining more than 100 percent within seconds. It took 45 minutes to resolve the problems, again pointing to the inability of individuals to contend with out-of-control computer based trading.

"We're losing the human control in our business," said Joe Anastasio, a founding partner of financial services consulting firm Capco who specializes in stock trading issues. "We've been so focused on automated throughput of orders and high-volume execution with no human intervention that we have lost the human logic factor when things go wrong."

Knight's shares were down 54 percent at $3.09 in afternoon trading after hitting a 13-year-low of $2.97 a share.

A SYSTEMIC RISK FOR MARKETS?

Although Knight opened for trading on Thursday there were questions about how the firm's possible failure might affect the vast network of brokers that rely on it to process orders and whether a failure could cause serious market stress.

"Knight is the one franchise that has built a network of over well over 800 broker-dealers throughout the country," said Chris Nagy, a market structure consultant.

"Many of those 800 broker-dealers, although they have very small amounts of order flow, in aggregate, represent a significant amount of volume. That's the concern, because quite frankly, those firms have no other options."

Knight's daily market-making volume was $19.5 billion in June, down 12 percent from a year ago as overall equity trading volumes have declined.

Street One Financial, a Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania-based firm that executes trades for institutional investors, on Thursday got calls from seven new asset management firms wanting to place trades because they did not want to trade with Knight due to concerns over the firm's viability.

"They have heard the reports that Knight is asking JPMorgan for an emergency loan and they don't want to risk it," said Scott Freeze, chief executive of Street One Financial.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority are looking into Knight's trading error, according to William Brodsky, CEO of top U.S. options market CBOE Holdings Inc.

"It's obvious that it appears that there was a technology glitch in the trading algorithm," Brodsky told analysts on Thursday. "All markets have rules to address these types of situations."

While securities regulators are looking into what went wrong on the trading side, the focus from the futures industry is on the estimated $411 million in customer funds that were part of Knight's purchase in May of floundering futures brokerage Penson Financial Services.

Confidence in the futures industry's ability to safeguard customer funds has been shaken after two financially pressed futures brokers in less than a year have been accused of improperly raiding customer accounts for as much as $1.8 billion, despite regulatory oversight.

Speaking on Bloomberg Television Thursday morning, Knight Capital Chief Executive Officer Tom Joyce said the firm had "excess capital right now." On Tuesday night, it had put in new software that had a bug, he said.

The firm said it was in compliance with capital requirements, and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, which oversees broker-dealers, confirmed Knight was in compliance.

"This issue was related to Knight's installation of trading software and resulted in Knight sending numerous erroneous orders in NYSE-listed securities into the market," Knight said. "This software has been removed from the company's systems."

On July 18, Knight reported second-quarter earnings of $3.3 million, down 81 percent from a year earlier after recording a $35.4 million pretax trading loss from the Facebook initial public offering. The company has not yet filed its second-quarter report with regulators.

Longview Capital Management, LLC, a Wilmington, Delaware-based registered investment adviser with $200 million in assets under management, is holding off from trading with Knight until "it gets its act together and tell us where they stand," said Christian Wagner, chief executive and chief investment officer of the firm.

"They are simply out of rotation right now until we are satisfied that they are back on their feet."
