Wild coyotes 'kind of chilling' by Wrigley Field

CHICAGO (AP) ? Wild baseball fans may be a standard sight at Wrigley Field, but a pair of wild coyotes milling around Chicago's historic ballpark ? surrounded on all sides by bars, restaurants and busy streets ? was not what one photographer was expecting on a busy Friday night.

So he quickly grabbed his camera.

"They were just kind of chilling," freelance photographer Will Byington said. "They were hanging out and not even doing much. They were kind of just checking out the scene on a Friday night in Wrigleyville. It was like they were on a date, taking a stroll."

Byington said he was shooting a concert at a bar across the street from the stadium in the Wrigleyville neighborhood, notoriously crowded and often rowdy on weekend nights, when he saw the two coyotes hanging out by the statute of former Chicago Cubs player Ernie Banks, near the ticketing area.

"It was kind of like they were looking for tickets," the 34-year-old Chicago resident laughed. "They went by the ticket window and unfortunately found it was closed, so they were ready to move onto the bar."

Wildlife ecologist Stanley Gehrt, who has extensively studied coyotes living in and around Chicago, said coyotes have been in the area for the past decade. He said the latest data shows there are at least 2,000 coyotes in Cook County, where Chicago is located.

"That's their territory. They live there," Gehrt, who works at Ohio State University, said of the unusual pair, which he said were born and raised in the city and likely live in Wrigleyville.

Byington had just a few minutes to snap his nighttime photos before the animals moved on. But he said the coyotes appeared unfazed by the honking horns and packed sidewalks. One even stepped onto a street as cabs and cars crawled by in traffic as if the coyote was "trying to figure out, do they want to eat? Or do they want to get a drink?" he said.

Byington didn't think much of his photos until he posted them online. But they started gathering attention after getting picked up on Facebook by the Cubby Bear bar where he had been working that night.

Chicago Cubs fan Dan Michaels reasons that the coyotes were likely fellow fans of the lackluster team and simply mixed up their calendars.

"My personal theory is they don't know that the Cubs play in summer," he said Wednesday as he walked by the stadium. "They picked the wrong season to wait out by the game."

Attorney expects Lohan will be cleared in NYC case

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney for Lindsay Lohan says he expects the actress will be cleared of a charge that she hit a woman in a Manhattan nightclub.

Lawyer Mark Heller said Thursday that Lohan is being targeted because of her fame.

The "Mean Girls" star was arrested by New York police around 4 a.m. Thursday and charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

The woman in the club did not require medical attention, and Lohan was released hours later.

Prosecutors in Santa Monica also charged Lohan on Thursday with lying to police and reckless driving involving a June accident on Pacific Coast Highway.

The charge could trigger a probation violation and another jail sentence for the 26-year-old.

Texas millionaire charged with child molestation

Stanley Marsh 3, the eccentric millionaire artist best known for his "Cadillac Ranch" art display along an interstate in the Texas Panhandle, was charged Wednesday with 11 felony counts of molesting children.

The 74-year-old turned himself in at a county jail after an arrest warrant was issued, accusing him of molesting two teenagers in 2010. His arrest follows the filing of several lawsuits against him for allegedly paying 10 teens for sex acts.

The charges could go before a grand jury in the next few weeks or soon after the first of the year, special prosecutor Matt Powell said.

"This is the beginning of the process," Powell said. "This is what we felt like we needed to do."

According to criminal complaints filed in Potter County, Marsh had the teens engage in sexual acts, including masturbation and oral sex, on three days in 2010. He was charged with six counts of child sexual assault and five counts of sexual performance by a child.

Marsh's criminal attorneys, Paul Nugent and Heather Peterson of Houston, denied the charges, saying in a statement that the teens in the civil cases waited until Marsh suffered a massive stroke last year to move forward with a plan "to become multimillionaires" by signing with a Houston personal injury attorney.

"The investigation into the group's claims is far from complete," the attorneys wrote in their statement. "There should be no premature rush to judgment. Stanley Marsh 3 is not guilty of the group's allegations, and will fight as vigorously as his declining health permits."

The six lawsuits claim Marsh paid the boys, ages 15 and 16, for sexual acts. One claimed that Marsh provided him drugs and alcohol, bought him two cars, and paid him at several points during a year in sums of as much as $10,000.

Marsh's civil attorney, Kelly Utsinger, has denied those allegations. He did not immediately return a call seeking comment on Wednesday's criminal complaints.

The teens' Houston-based civil attorney, Anthony Buzbee, said two of the teens went to police in late summer before the lawsuits were filed, but two others didn't speak with investigators until early November - about the time Marsh's offices were searched. One teen's mother sought out a civil attorney when she didn't hear back from police, according to the lawsuits.

Marsh is probably best known for planting 10 brightly painted Cadillacs nose down along Interstate 40 in the Panhandle in the 1970s. The cars, ranging from a 1948 club coupe to a 1963 sedan and gathered from junkyards, private collectors and used car lots, have since become a pop art landmark.

Visitors through the years have splattered them with graffiti and in 2005 they were coated in pink to honor breast cancer victims, survivors and their families. Marsh also has painted them black and yellow to honor the passing of longtime friends.

An Amarillo native and philanthropist, Marsh and his wife have donated to local art and education causes. After he suffered the massive stroke and a series of smaller ones, his wife was appointed his guardian.

Marsh was indicted on charges of indecency with a child in 1996, but the charges were eventually dismissed. That same year Marsh acknowledged no wrongdoing in a settlement with a youth who claimed Marsh sexually abused him.

In 2001, parties in four lawsuits that alleged imprisonment, sexual misconduct and harassment of teens were settled. Marsh apologized but no other details were made public.

Media executives revealed as chairs of anti-NBA group

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The co-chairs of Home Court Advantage, a group aimed at discouraging Louisville from pursuing an NBA team to share the KFC Yum! Center with the University of Louisville, have revealed their involvement in a letter to business leaders.

Keith Hall, a former Insight Communications executive, and George Demaree, the General Sales Manager of Main Line Broadcasting, tout their media experience in the letter, saying, "our own personal pocketbooks have often been dependent on good investment decisions regarding athletics of all kinds on all levels."

Attached to the letter is a study commissioned by the group, revealed by WHAS11 earlier this month, which concludes that the costs associated with attracting and retaining a National Basketball Association franchise for Louisville outweigh the benefits.?

Hall is a former member of the University of Louisville Board of Overseers.? A U of L spokesman has said that the university was not involved in the study and, to his knowledge, had not requested it.

"Our initiative, Home Court Advantage, strives to educate members of our community about the detrimental effects an NBA team would have on our city and its local universities," the letter reads.

Mayor Greg Fischer has dismissed the study, conducted by Cambridge Economic Research, as biased.? Fischer said he encouraged Greater Louisville Inc to commission its own study.

Hall and Demaree criticize Fischer's efforts to ready the city for an NBA team if the opportunity arises, citing a meeting attended by Fischer and NBA proponents that did not include representation from the University of Louisville, the KFC Yum! Center's anchor tenant.

"As a community, are we comfortable in alienating our city?s public university at the expense of 'getting prepared?'" the letter asks.? "Are we OK with spending taxpayer dollars to finance preparations for an NBA team that is not guaranteed to arrive or stay in our city?"

A spokesman for Fischer, however, told WHAS11 that U of L Athletic Director Tom Jurich advised Fischer to contact him about the NBA conversation only after the city had identified a team.

Fischer has repeatedly said that any deal for an NBA team would have to include and be a "win" for U of L athletics.? The mayor has suggested that an NBA team offers a solution for the struggling finances of the downtown arena and the businesses surrounding the arena whose tax revenue helps pay off the arena's construction debt.

The co-chairs say that management changes at the KFC Yum! Center are showing good results.

"We think giving them the running room to continue their momentum makes more sense than throwing them a curveball at this crucial time," the letter states.

Hall and Demaree also claim that an NBA team would sabotage other events booked at the KFC Yum! Center, effectively removing U of L's Womens? Basketball Team and Women's volleyball program.? The letter also claims that the NBA's demand for arena dates would disqualify the KFC Yum! Center for the NCAA Men?s Basketball Tournament NCAA Volleyball Final Four.

Home Court Advantage plans meetings with business leaders to share the study's findings and relay concerns about the NBA's effect on the University of Louisville.

"Our community needs to be aware that renegotiating a contract in hopes of obtaining a seat at the NBA bargaining table is not a fruitful exercise," the letter concludes.

Wednesday's Powerball jackpot hits $550 million

As the Powerball frenzy continues, people across the nation are rushing out to buy their ticket to a dream, but winning the jackpot can sometime translate to major losses. NBC's Erica Hill reports on the lottery "curse" and two September Powerball winners how their lives have changed, for better and for worse.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Updated at 1:35 p.m. ET: Someone could win $550 million in Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, the largest in the game's history.

The jackpot jumped up from half a billion dollars on Wednesday, according to the Powerball website. The new jackpot would carry a cash value of $360.2 million before taxes.

Lottery officials say they now believe there is a 75 percent chance the winning numbers will be drawn Wednesday night, The Associated Press reported. Powerball is played across 42 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands.

As big as this week's Powerball jackpot is, it's not the largest lottery prize ever. That mark is held by the $656 million Mega Millions jackpot that was split by three ticket buyers earlier this year. The previous biggest Powerball prize was $365 million in 2006, shared by several ConAgra Foods workers in Lincoln, Neb.

Since the jackpot is an estimate, the prize money could be increased as the drawing nears, the AP reported.

Related: 11 things more likely to happen than winning the Powerball jackpot

There were no Powerball winners for Saturday's drawing, in which $325 million was up for grabs.?The winning numbers Saturday were 22-32-37-44-50 with Powerball 34, according to the Powerball lottery's website. There were 10 winners of $1 million and one winner of $2 million.

The huge jackpot has brought a flood of ticket sales. "It?s been crazy," said the manager of a 7-Eleven convenience store in Westminster, Colo., that sold 2,000 tickets in 11 hours on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

Ticket buyers are not only dreaming of living large, but already brewing ways in which they might quit their job.

"I was thinking maybe I should hire a marching band to help me (quit)," Joe Cooke of Illinois told Reuters, after buying $50 in Powerball tickets Wednesday morning. "Or maybe I'll just walk right into office and moon him." Cooke, 29, fields customer service calls for a financial institution, which he describes as listening to "rich, mean people" complaining all day, Reuters reported.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

We Have To Change College Algebra | Reference and Education ...

To finish a degree, you must have college algebra, that's exactly what most majors think. Every single year a half of million university students take college algebra. This number a good reason for brand new studies with algebra courses - more interest from students can be made, higher success rates can be achieved and students could have better retention rates.Adequate college algebra help is given to the university students nowadays.

Survey Results All kinds of students have a problem with algebra and they need to devote lots of time to complete this class. This can be noticed in popular schools too, the gifted folks are hindered by algebra, not to mention trigonometry and calculus. There are students taking these courses 3 or 4 and even higher number of times to be able to complete the algebra exams. Some of them are seen taking additional college algebra help. The statistics say that 60 percent of students end up getting a bachelor's degree. When we compare algebra grades with the grades in different subjects, we find that we now have much more F's and D's.

Popular Reasons For Choosing Algebra

The fundamental reason why students go for algebra would be to fulfill a college or state requirement. The majority of students take up a standard College Algebra, based upon 1950's curriculum with the aim to prepare them for Calculus. Yet, it is seen that 90% of individuals won't ever take Calculus. Hence the traditional College Algebra along with its content are thought to be irrelevant and are just looked upon as a dreary obstacle to get a college education.

Why Choose A New Approach

If we did not have mathematics, the society would not succeed. We have to study ratios, decimals, rates and build numerical skills. Only a decent grounding in mathematics can hone these abilities. Investment opportunities, animated movies, airfare ticket costs are strengthened by Algebraic algorithms. Young people need to understand how those things work. There's a certain ideology behind the numbers, and algebra allows us to recognize and understand that ideology. The modern day times that we live in are statistical and that requires more informed citizenship. What is essentially needed is a greater comprehension of different numbers. College algebra assistance goes a long distance to fully grasp those book formulas and what they actually convey.

Once we figure out the idea behind these formulations, we are more intellectually proficient and more mindful of our surroundings. Hence, it's easy to understand why MIT or Caltech want each one of us to be proficient in mathematics. Math, applied or pure, is quite essential for the progress of our civilization. In an effort to decrease the ordeal and make algebra more attractive, exciting courses and college algebra help familiarize students with kinds of statistics that summarize our private and public life, whether the sphere is electronic or visual.

The Final Thoughts On College Algebra

The first year of geometry is a requirement for all higher-level math, trigonometry, calculus and algebra II. Students having high-level math course are more prone to do well in college math. Latest survey has found that reading along with math skills are required to work as plumber, electrician and even upholsterer. Algebra is, the portal to success these days. The college students, with a little college algebra help can make successful changeover from solid arithmetic to the symbolic language of algebra.

New 3-D movie technology: are viewers ready?

14 hrs.

When the?3-D version of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" debuts in movie theaters on Dec.?14, the film will likely wow viewers with its special effects. But audiences at select theaters will get even more bang for their buck: they?ll be the first to witness a new technology that displays images at a rate of 48 frames per second, twice as fast as the current standard.

The new display rate is sure to look different. Whether audiences will like it is less certain. So far, early reviews have been mixed, according to 3D Focus, a website that tracks changes in 3-D-viewing technology.?

BLOG: Is 3-D vision bad for you??

Some people think the effects look "too real." For others, eyestrain, headaches, nausea and other discomforts are as much of a hazard as they were with the older technologies. That's because most films that are designed to make images look like they are popping out of the screen work by showing each eye different pictures at different times. That forces the brain to merge conflicting messages -- an obstacle that 3-D studios are still working to overcome.

"People really differ," said Marty Banks, a vision scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. "Some people just don't get it and they're fine. Other people are fairly uncomfortable. The industry is really worried about this. They're listening to us?scientists and they?re taking our advice."

ll movies, whether "2-D" or "3-D" create the illusion of movement by flashing one still image after another onto the screen at a rate that is fast enough to fool our brains into seeing action. If the sequence of images is presented too slowly, the result is a shaky effect called "judder" that can sometimes look like a double image.

3-D technology (which Banks prefers to call stereo-3-D or S3-D because even "2-D" movies look three-dimensional) raises the risk for judder because these films usually show screen shots in an alternating sequence to one eye at a time. First the left eye sees an image, then the right eye sees one, then the left eye sees the next image, and so on.

With the latest generation of 3-D glasses, polarizing filters allow each eye to see light coming from just one direction, and screen shots are displayed so that a single lens is targeted at a time. When one eye is stimulated, the other eye is presented with darkness.

It's up to the brain to put everything together into a coherent picture. But with each eye seeing alternating flashes of brightness and darkness, jumpy judder can creep in, causing distraction or discomfort.

BLOG: Sony?s 3-D digital recording binoculars

To solve that problem, 3-D films that are shot at a standard 24 frames per second actually show the left eye a single image three times in a row with flashes of darkness in between. Then the right eye gets its image three times in a row, and that pattern continues for the entire film. This "triple flashing" allows the screen to display 72 frames per second, which reduces flicker effects.

For the new Hobbit, director Peter Jackson used new technology to film at 48 frames per second instead of 24. In real life, our visual systems take in information continuously, and some experts speculate that images will need to be captured at more than 100 or even 150 frames per second before a movie looks truly real. But with any increase in frame-rate speed, motion should look smoother and more realistic.

"As you increase the rate of new incoming data, you're getting closer and closer to the real world," Banks said. "At some rate, you will get to the point where you can?t tell the difference."

But first, moviemakers have some technical issues to deal with.

One question, Engle said, is whether the technological limitations of the projectors used by most theaters will require them to use fewer flashes for each eye before switching to the other eye?s image????a switch that could actually cause new stuttering problems.

NEWS: Underwater movie maker: Shaun MacGillivray

Some theaters use a dual-projector set-up that gets around that issue by showing images to both eyes at the same time, and in those cases, Engle said, the results should be spectacular. But theaters that use a single projector to display 3-D movies will have some new decisions to make, and audiences might not be universally happy about the final product.

"You have to be careful what you wish for," said Rob Engle, 3-D supervisor at a major film studio in Burbank, Calif. "If you have to make compromises in order to increase the frame rate by decreasing the flash rate, you start to run into trade-offs."

As higher frame rates lead to more realism, dismay is also cropping up among people who are used to seeing films that look like films rather than television or real life. Similar complaints have emerged whenever filmmaking technology has risen to a new level over the decades.

"Every time we've moved closer to reality by adding sound, adding color or getting rid of scratches, in the end, the audience has accepted it and there's no going back," Banks said. "I think the same is going to be true here.

"In the end, we all want immersion. We want to feel like we're in that scene and closer to reality. I think once people see it, they are going to go, 'Wow. I want that.'"

?Clearwater Capital has decided to invest about Rs 100 crore in our township in Dwarka,? Ramprastha Chief Executive Officer Nikhil Jain told PTI.

The investment would be in the form of debt, he added. Clearwater Capital Partners is an investment firm with a 10-year track record of investing in credit and special situations in Asia.

Jain said the company had earlier raised about Rs 150 crore from India Property Fund in the two group housing projects ? Skyz and Rise ? that are part of this township.

India Property Fund, a joint venture between Varnado of US and TCG of India, has picked up 49 per cent stake in these two group housing projects.

On the total investment in the townships, Jain said the project cost is about Rs 4,000 crore and this would be largely funded through internal accruals and advances against sales.

Besides group housing and plots, the township would have commercial space and institutional area.

Ramprashtha Group is currently developing over 10 million sq ft area and has land bank for development potential of over 140 million sq ft.

?We have a huge land bank in Gurgaon of about 1,500 acres and we have land in Ghaziabad also,? Jain said.

Asked about revenue, he said the group turnover is about Rs 600 crore.

Modern Bungalow: FixitUp Find

I love the Modern Bungalow story.

Started by husband and wife team Ed and Kate Sultan, they were at a crossroads in life when a small need combined with a big passion that turned into their life?s work.

Ed and Kate bought a 1919 bungalow and discovered that their furniture didn?t fit the clean lines and structural details of the home so Ed, then a hobbyist woodworker, converted the garage into a shop and and started cutting. Kate on the other hand is a retail ace and with the creation of furniture and a passion for detailed design, they realized they were on to something.

Today Modern Bungalow is not only a resource for furniture and design lovers?especially of the Arts & Crafts style?to shop for lighting, rugs, tiles, pottery and home accents but Ed and Kate can help you with an overall home design that, like them, helps you fit your space and your space fit you. Samsung accuses iPad mini of patent infringement in latest legal salvo

Samsung successfully added the iPhone 5 to its newest patent battle with Apple, and today the company accused several more of Cupertino's products of infringement ? including the iPad mini. In a court filing today, the company asked to include Apple's 7.9-inch tablet along with the latest versions of the iPod Touch and iPad; all of the devices are accused of infringing the same patents already in play in the case.

Apple won a jury verdict in a courtroom fight between the two companies earlier this year, but this second lawsuit will likely go to trial sometime next year. Apple has accused the Galaxy Nexus, the Galaxy S III, and an assortment of other products thus far, while Samsung has returned with its own accusations in kind. While these latest devices won't be officially included until the request is approved by US Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal, there is little reason to think they won't make it in, raising the stakes for Apple ? and ramping up the pressure to settle just that much more.

Mars is safe from radiation - but the trip there isn't

You needn't fry on Mars. Readings from NASA's Curiosity rover suggest radiation levels on the Red Planet are about the same as those in low Earth orbit, where astronauts hang out for months on the International Space Station. A Mars visit would still be dangerous though, due to the years-long return trip.

Unlike Earth, Mars has no magnetosphere shielding it from solar and galactic radiation. But it does have a thin atmosphere, and readings from two of Curiosity's instruments suggest this provides some protection.

"This is the first ever measurement of the radiation environment on any planet other than Earth," Curiosity team member Don Hassler said at a press briefing on 15 November. "Astronauts can live in this environment."

The rover's weather station recorded evidence of what is known as a thermal tide on Mars. Sunlight heats the planet's atmosphere on the side facing the sun, causing it to expand upwards and triggering a decrease in air pressure. But things chill quickly on the other side, so that the atmosphere deflates and becomes denser.

As Mars rotates, the bulge of heated air travels with the "day" side from east to west. Curiosity feels this effect as changes in air pressure over the course of a Martian day, rover scientist Claire Newman of Ashima Research in California said during the briefing.

Radiation shield

At the same time, the rover's radiation monitor saw daily dips in charged particles that match the increases in air pressure that come with a denser atmosphere. "The atmosphere is acting as a shield to radiation," Hassler said.

The scientists were not ready to put numbers to the daily radiation dose people would experience on Mars. But the overall levels are lower than those the spacecraft carrying Curiosity recorded during its interplanetary flight, and about what astronauts see on the ISS.

"It's roughly what we were expecting," astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell of University College London told New Scientist.

The biggest threat to Mars voyagers would be the cumulative radiation exposure during the long trip. NASA estimates that a return human mission to Mars would take three years. During that time astronauts might receive more than seven times the radiation dose they get during six months on the ISS.

Setting limits

Building up radiation exposure increases the risk of developing various cancers, so NASA has set limits on how much total radiation astronauts can experience over the course of their careers. Figuring out the exact risk on Mars is crucial to understanding the total dose a human mission would face and whether it is within safe limits, Hassler said.

Solar flares would also be a problem. On Earth these eruptions of charged particles from the sun are largely deflected by the magnetosphere. But Mars enjoys no such protection, and since Curiosity has yet to see a flare, it is unclear how much shielding the thin atmosphere would provide. '

Dartnell suggests that a base or colony on Mars could be built underground to avoid surface radiation. Or, with enough advance warning, astronauts could retreat to protective shelters during a flare. But is all that trouble worth it just to send humans where robots already thrive?

"An astronaut or geologist that's trained in science that has a brain and a pair of hands and pair of eyes with a rock hammer can do a lot more on the surface on Mars before breakfast than a robot can do in weeks," says Dartnell.

117,500 Peopel Attend Formula 1 Grand Prix In Texas

Color me surprised as 117, 429 people attended the first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin Texas.
From the Austin Statesman:
Officials with the Circuit of the Americas report that 117,429 people watched Lewis Hamilton win the U.S. Grand Prix today.
The attendance number is nearly on-par with the estimated 120,000 people expected to attend the first Formula One race in the U.S. since 2007.http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/racing/entries/2012/11/18/final_count_for_us_grand_prix.html/
Also from the Statesman:?
Two and a half years after a group of investors ? some said dreamers ? announced it would bring Formula One racing to Austin, more than 117,000 fans packed into the just-completed Circuit of the Americas to watch the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.
And despite beer shortages, long shuttle bus lines after the race and delays on some roads leaving the track, fans and drivers were eager to praise the event.
?The warm welcome we?ve had has been fantastic, and I think this is probably one of the best, if not the best grand prix we?ve had all year,? said winner Lewis Hamilton.
Organizers not only finished the job ? which included engineering and building the track, a grandstand, a paddock, an emergency medical building, a media center, a 250-foot tower and temporary bleachers ? but just as challenging, race officials managed to move hundreds of thousands of people to and from the track with relative ease.
The race drew a distinctly different kind of Austin tourist, and for many it was the first time to visit the city. For the die-hard fans, the draw of Austin seemed incidental compared with the circuit, but the city also made an impression.? http://www.statesman.com/news/news/local-govt-politics/on-f1s-big-day-an-austin-success/nS9WR/
Any time you have a beer shortage, that's not a very successful day.? But I'm glad they got a large crowd and may they can expand the Formula 1 schedule to add at least 1 more race in the United States.

Obama: Myanmar visit marks 'next step'

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) ? President Barack Obama says his historic visit to Myanmar marks the next step in a new chapter between the two countries.

Speaking after a private meeting with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi (ahng sahn soo chee), Obama said he's seen encouraging signs of progress in the country in the past year. Those signs, he said, include Suu Kyi's release from house arrest and her election to parliament.

Long shunned because of a repressive military rule, a transition to democracy began last year after a nominally civilian government took office and began taking steps toward democracy.

Obama says ties between the U.S. and Myanmar will grow stronger if the moves toward democracy continue.

He is the first sitting U.S. president to visit Myanmar, which also is known as Burma.

Beating the dark side of quantum computing

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? A future quantum computer will be able to carry out calculations billions of times faster than even today's most powerful machines by exploit the fact that the tiniest particles, molecules, atoms and subatomic particles can exist in more than one state simultaneously. Scientists and engineers are looking forward to working with such high-power machines but so too are cyber-criminals who will be able to exploit this power in cracking passwords and decrypting secret messages much faster than they can now.

Now, Richard Overill of the Department of Informatics at King's College London is working in the field of digital forensics to develop the necessary tools to pre-empt the cyber-criminals as quantum computing becomes reality. Writing in the Int. J. Information Technology, Communications and Convergence, Overill explains that while quantum computing is in its infancy, as with earlier technological leaps once the nuts and bolts are in place, it will be adopted rapidly by computer scientists and others eager to utilise its enormous potential.

The technologies that will underpin quantum computing will be quite esoteric to the non-specialist and include laser-excited atomic ion traps using beryllium or calcium atoms, bulk liquid-phase and solid-phase nuclear magnetic resonance, as well superconducting solid-state circuits operating at liquid helium temperatures. Of course, the semiconductor, silicon chip technology underpinning current supercomputers is perhaps just as esoteric although seems more familiar to us now.

Nevertheless, it is not the complexities of the technology that is important but what it will allow computer users to do such as solving logistics problems by overlaying all possible solutions and allowing quantum mechanics to find the optimal route, for instance. Or creating encryption keys that could never be cracked by a conventional computer. And, as Overill warns, providing those intent on cracking passwords and such to apply computational brute force with immeasurable efficiency. Such power might be wielded by crime fighters and criminals alike.

"At first sight, therefore, it would appear that with the advent of practical quantum computers the task of cyber-law enforcement will become significantly more challenging," says Overill. However, as has always been the case with crime and crime fighting, forensics constantly plays catch up with the technology exploited by criminals and so too with quantum computers. Overill provides a roadmap for how research into digital forensics must progress if crime fighters and investigators are to keep up with the pace of change.

Currently there is no answer to beating quantum crime. "There are ultimate physical limitations on what forensic information can be recovered from a quantum computation," says Overill. Forensic has always had such limitations but investigators are adept at obtaining clues regardless. "So, our digital quantum forensics mission has to focus on learning how to get 'more from less', by squeezing every last drop of information from the traces that can be recovered, and then devising novel techniques to interpret these traces as richly as possible."
