School's Out. Now What?

by Theresa Casey, Recreation Manager

There?s nothing to do. Do you hear this complaint from your kids? If you do, you haven?t seen our summer recreation guide. Swimming, rock climbing, teen duckie trip, ping pong tournament, youth tennis clinic, fly fishing, picnic in the park and mini golf, farmers market kids, W is for Wolf, Dog Daze, youth gardening, park and pool, pre-school parks and track meets are some of the fun- filled activities being presented by the Salida Recreation staff. If you haven?t had a chance to check out the hot springs pool or some of the many activities, it is time you stop by to see for yourself what is in store for the summer. Our Recreation Guide is available at the pool or check our website at www.salidarec.com for a listing of events and activities.

Adult activities and fitness classes are also abundant this summer. How about a trip to the Bat Caves at the Orient Mine or to ride the Monarch Crest Scenic Tram? Water exercise classes are easy on the joints, and great exercise for all abilities. If you are an early riser, we are hosting a morning Fitness Boot Camp; try Adult Coached Swim practices, or work on your muscle tone with Adult Strength Training or Kickboxing classes.? Join us this summer for some local adventures and get fit at the same time.

Check out the Hot Springs Pool on Father?s Day. Dads are free when accompanied by their family and because we were not able to open on Mother?s Day this year, mom is going to be free on Father?s Day too.

The Thursday?s at Six Concert Series is sure to be a fun filled family night at Riverside Park. Bring a picnic dinner and join your neighbors for an evening of music and games each Thursday starting June 21and running through August 9. All concerts are free with donations collected for the Salida Recreation Scholarship Fund. The City of Salida and the Go To Guide are the presenting sponsors with additional sponsorship from Salida Mountain Sports, The Book Haven, Pinto Barn, Pinon Real Estate, Gone to the Dogs, Su Casa, The Victoria Tavern and Pinon Vacation Rentals; without our sponsors, this concert series would not be possible. Please stop by their business and thank them for their generosity.

Salida Recreation Scholarship Fund

We strive to keep recreational opportunities affordable so that all of Salida?s citizens may participate. In order to further increase participation, we are launching the Salida Recreation Scholarship Fund. You can make a child?s wish to take swim lessons or cooking class come true or help a struggling senior to stay active by donating to this fund.

Donations can be made at the pool, at the Thursday?s at Six Concert Series or by mailing a check to the pool at 410 W Rainbow Blvd, Salida, CO 81201. Please make checks out to Salida Recreation, and mark ?Scholarship Fund? in the memo line.

These funds will only be used to help Chaffee County citizens in need to afford recreational opportunities. This fund will need to grow before we can offer scholarships, but look for this opportunity in the coming year. Scholarship recipients can be referred by teachers, family, ?friends, employers or doctors.
