KELOWNA, BC - In the dying minutes of injury time, UBC Okanagan Heat midfielder Sean Causier (5th year, Port Moody, BC) put away the equalizer to give the Heat a 1-1 tie against the nationally 6th ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners.

"The guys continue to try and play football as we've asked them," commented Heat head coach Dante Zanatta. "It's unfortunate that some of those bounces that we're getting now at the end of the year didn't come earlier in the year."

The Mariners got off to an early offensive start when Romain Martin (forward, 3rd year, Victoria, BC) cracked a shot off of a Heat post. As VIU continued to mount the pressure on the Heat defense, fifth year defender Mathew Rigden (Duncan, BC) sent a perfect pass to midfielder Mateo Kostering (1st year, Alert Bay, BC), who made good on his scoring opportunity to put the Mariners up 1-0.

During the second half the Heat really turned on the offense, creating multiple opportunities to score. In the 80th minute of play freshman midfielder Matthew McHugh (Kelowna, BC) made a run from center, taking a shot that was just long. Austin Jones (Midfielder, 3rd year, Vernon, BC) maintained Heat momentum as he took a shot that was snagged by the Mariner?s keeper.

Just when the game seemed out of reach, the Heat created one last goalscoring opportunity in stoppage time. The ball was passed back outside the 18-yard box, and Sean Causier ran in from midfield to bury a one-timer for UBC Okanagan.

The Heat are now ranked seventh overall in PACWEST and have a record of 1W-7L-5T. The Mariners currently sit in second at 8W-1L-4T.

The Heat will be saying good bye to three of their players in a senior's day ceremony right before their last game of the season. Fifth years Sean Causier, forward Zach Donaldson-Hall (Kamloops, BC) and captain Dustin Luck (Defender, Kelowna, BC) will be playing for the last time on home turf.

"I've enjoyed my time here, the boys are great," reflected Causier. "It's tough to go out without making the playoffs, but I think we had high hopes after [qualifying] last year."

The Heat return to Nonis Field for one last time this season on Sunday October 20th against Capilano University at 2 p.m.
